Proverbs 10:19
“…it is not really in the amount of words…”
Proverbs 10:19, In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
Whenever we are being questioned, oftentimes we think that we need to speak many words in order to explain and justify ourselves, or explain a particular matter. While it is true that we may need to clarify certain things with many words, it is not really in the amount of words, but in facts and truth.
Here, the emphasis is not that we cannot speak many words. When we think we can justify ourselves, win a debate, or clarify a matter, with a multitude of words, that is when we will sin. When we speak without thinking through what we say, and what we say is not based on the truth, that is when we will sin. The phrase wanteth not sin means not lacking in sin. Those people who just speak without considering what they say, they will say wrong and foolish things. The word but is the contrast. But he that refraineth his lips means to control what he says according to the truth. Such a person is wise!
Dear children, if you want to be wise, you must not just speak without thinking through what you say. But rather, you must control what you say, by considering if what you say is the right thing to say, and if it is according to the truth. When you do that, then you will be wise!
