Proverbs 27:17
“…speak the truth about you even if it hurts…”
Proverbs 27:17, Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
Most people only want to hear good things, and dislike being told they are wrong. A good friend is someone who loves and cares for you so much that he or she will speak the truth about you even if it hurts.
A useful knife is one that is sharp, and a blunt knife is useless because it cannot cut anything. In those days, when the people wanted to sharpen their knives, they would use another knife to rub against it. That is what it means, iron sharpeneth iron.
The word countenance can mean character. It takes good friends to correct one another so that they can build up one another’s good character.
Dear children, you must learn to cherish those good friends who will tell you the truth about yourself. Sometimes those words may hurt you, but they are beneficial for you. And you must also be a good friend to tell the truth about your friends. In this way, you will sharpen one another to build up good and godly characters.
