Psalm 23:2
“…sheep need to rest…”
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters (Psalm 23:2)
Just like all other animals, sheep need to rest. But sheep do not lie down and rest easily. Basically, there are various reasons;
- They are timid and tend to be afraid of their surroundings.
- They are not free from any discomfort like flies and parasites.
- The slightest friction with other sheep will frustrate and irritate them.
- They feel the need to find food and water.
Only when the shepherd provides them the trust, peace, deliverance and pasture, will the sheep lie down and rest peacefully. The phrase green pastures refers to the abundance of food, and still waters speaks of no danger lurking around or beneath the waters.
Dear children, we are like sheep who cannot find rest as we are constantly burdened by fear, easily distracted by troubles, and always worried about our needs. Remember, the promises of our Lord Jesus. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst (John 6:35). Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27). With Jesus, as our Shepherd and Perfect Provider, it is not how can we find rest, but how can we not find rest!
