Proverbs 4:23
“…the centre of a person…”
Proverbs 4:23, Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
The heart is the centre of a person, and basically it is “you,” or who you really are. Here, the command is to guard or protect yourself carefully, and that is what it means to keep your heart or yourself with all diligence.
How do we guard our hearts with all diligence? — We guard our hearts carefully by using the Word of God as a yardstick to measure the things we do, say or think, whether they are right or wrong.
Why do we guard our hearts with all diligence? — We guard our hearts carefully because out of the heart will flow all aspects of our lives; our actions, words, thoughts and motivations. And what is in our hearts will determine our beliefs, desires, behaviours and values, which will then affect the ways we live and the consequences we face in life.
Dear children, that is why the wisdom from God’s Word tells us to guard our hearts carefully so that only righteous actions, good conversations, and godly thoughts will come forth from us. To the glory of God!
