Psalm 23:1b
“…they lack everything…”
I shall not want. (Psalm 23:1b)
Sheep are very helpless animals. They are defenceless, timid and do not know how to provide for themselves. A little noise can send them running, and when they run, with their big bodies and thin legs, they cannot run fast and far. Oftentimes, they are easy prey for predators like wolves. If left to themselves, they lack everything.
Christians are called sheep who belong to the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who is the Shepherd. Therefore, the Psalmist said, The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. The word “want” means to be lacking.
Dear children, what we can learn from this Psalm is that if we have Jesus as our Shepherd, then we shall not lack anything; protection, provision, rest, guidance, safety, shelter, assurance, etc. Jesus is the good Shepherd who loves us so much that He even laid down His life to save us. His love for us does not stop at saving us from eternal hell by dying on the cross and shedding His precious blood to pay the penalty of our sins. He continues to take care of our lives, provide for our needs and protect us from danger. Therefore, as believers, we can all say, I shall not want.
