1 John 3:18
“…and we are able to help…”
My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth (1 John 3:18).
Are we not commanded to speak words of love? Colossians 4:6 said, “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt.” There are many good properties of salt; for example, salt has been used to purify, cleanse, preserve, heal, etc. Our words ought to be gracious, and be used to help others deal with sin, live godly lives, not be corrupted and be comforted.
Then why does the Bible say, “let us not love in word, neither in tongue”? The believers were already speaking words of love, but the Apostle John said, “Do not just speak loving words. But let your words be demonstrated into actions.” For example, when someone is in need of help, and we are able to help, we should not just say, “I feel for you, and I will pray for you.” Rather we should help!
Dear children, but both our actions or deeds must be according to the truth. When someone is living in sin, it is not loving to say, “That is alright.” We must speak the truth and tell the person that what he or she is doing is wrong. When someone needs our help to tell a lie or our money to buy something that is undesirable, it is not loving to say, “Well, I will help you.” That is not love according to God’s truth. We must always bear in mind that God is always watching, and He knows what we say and do!
