Proverbs 6:6-8
“…one of the smallest and insignificant creatures of the earth…”
Proverbs 6:6-8, Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathered her food in the harvest.
Oftentimes, when people want to learn valuable lessons, they would only think about great, powerful and successful people. Parents would say, “Learn from the smart philosopher, or influential businessman, or reputable king”. Here, interestingly, the Bible teaches us, to go to the ant, and learn from one of the smallest and insignificant creatures of the earth.
What lessons can we learn from the ant?
It is strong — Do you know that the ant can carry about 20 to 50 times its weight? How many of us can carry our own weight, let alone 20 or 50 times?
It is hardworking — Have you ever seen a “non-moving” ant? I have never seen one, except a dead ant. It is always moving and working. Therefore, the exhortation is to consider her hardworking ways, and not be a sluggard or lazy person.
It is wise — Like the ant, we ought to be wise, though there is no one to guide and lead it or rule over it, yet it works hard to provide for itself.
It is planning for the future — The time of summer and harvest is synonymous. In agricultural terms, there is a time for sowing, planting, watering and harvesting in summer. The ant is aware that the harvest is the time to work hard to reap the crop, gathereth her meat, so that it can have sufficient food for future needs.
Dear children, what a humbling and yet wise counsel to learn from the ant - the tiniest creature. Do not be lazy, but be strong, hardworking, wise and plan for the future!
