Dear Bethelites,
Greetings in the most blessed name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I trust this update finds you all well in the Lord. By God’s grace and through your prayers, we are doing well. I am very thankful to give a short report on the recent trip we made to Ngalti BPC. The purpose of the trip was to speak at Ngalti BPC’s 16th Anniversary Conference and to deliver relief aids to Ngalti BPC.
NGALTI BPC’S 16th ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE
Invited by Ngalti BPC to speak at their 16th Anniversary Conference, 12-19 April, the missions team from First BPC, comprising Pr Van Thawng Hup, Pr Tai Sut Thang, and Rev Biak Lawm Thang, set off to make another trip to Ngalti BPC on the 7th of April (Tuesday) and return on the 25th of April (Saturday). Unlike the previous trips, this trip was more challenging, because the civil war was ongoing in Chin State where Ngalti BPC is. Under such circumstances, all public transport services have been suspended in Chin State. So, after taking a domestic flight from Yangon to Kalemyo (about 1.45 hours of flight), which is a mid-way town to Ngalti, we had no other option but to hire a car to take us to Ngalti. As things are unpredictable, we can only make the travel arrangements after arriving at Kalemyo. Meanwhile, one important event took place, ie, Pr Sut’s wedding.
Pr Sut’s Wedding
Of all our preachers, Pr Tai Sut Thang is the only one still single. By God’s guidance, he found his “help meet” in Ms Can Cin Mawi from a village nearby Kalemyo. Thus on the 9th of April, Pr Tai Sut Thang and Ms Can Cin Mawi were united in holy matrimony in Kalemyo. We were privileged to witness and participate in the wedding. Praise God for the wedding. Do pray for the newly formed family.
Kalemyo to Ngalti
The next day after Pr Sut’s wedding saw us continue our journey from Kalemyo to Ngalti. The distance between these two places is about 90 miles, but due to the ongoing situation we needed to take a detour which required an extra 10 hours.
Getting ready early in the morning of 10th April, Friday, we left Kalemyo at 7.00 am with our hired car. The detour road was very challenging, and we had to cross many mountains and valleys, villages and military checkpoints. So, after 10 hours of almost non-stop ride, by God’s guidance and protection, we were able to arrive at Ngalti safe and sound, at 5.00 pm in the evening. Travelling in such troublous time, God’s wonderful promise of protection for His people in Psalm 121 seemed more real to us. “He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore” (Psalm 121:3-8). The next day, Saturday, was spent in another celebration of Pr Sut’s wedding with his families, brethren from Ngalti BPC, and relatives and friends from neighbouring villages. To these brethren from the nearby villages, we had the privilege to share God’s Word. All praise to God for His goodness.
The Anniversary Conference
From the 12th of April (the Lord’s Day) to 19th April (the next Lord’s Day), eight nights in total, we had night worship service, 7.30-9.00 pm. From Monday to Friday, 13th – 17th April, every day from 10.00 am - 3.00 pm was spent in an intensive and enthusiastic study of God’s Word. Except for night time, where all groups were combined, the conferees were divided into three groups. (1) Children – this group was taught by Pr Sut, accompanied with songs, and assisted by his wife. The number of children was about 30. (2) Young people and young adults – the number of this group was about 20. They were taught “Salvation and Christ's Life” based on the epistles to the Ephesians by Pr Thawng. (3) Adults and parents – this group was attended by the rest of the conference participants, taught by Rev Biak on the conference theme: Bible-Presbyterianism: Knowing What We Believe and Why. As for night services, all the participants were combined and Rev Biak spoke God’s Word as the main speaker.
Special Thanksgiving Service
A special thanksgiving service of Ngalti BPC’s 16th anniversary was held on the 18th of April, Saturday. All the brethren from Ngalti BPC, speakers from First BPC, and friends from the nearby villages, were gathered in the sanctuary at 2.30 pm for this special joyful event. We were all very happy and excited to give thanks to the Lord and render praises to Him for His goodness and faithfulness over the past one and half decades. The service was chaired by Rev Jeffrey Mang, pastor of Ngalti BPC, and Rev Biak spoke God’s Word, “An Exemplary Church” (1 Thessalonians 1:1-10). The church choir presented a praise item to the Lord, and the children's Sunday school group rendered Scripture recitation and praise items as well. Dn Hrang Than Zul, clerk of Ngalti BPC Session, took a moment to retell the history of Ngalti BPC, from its founding to the present, encouraging the congregation to give thanks to the Lord for His leading, guidance, and sustenance for the last 16 years, and to press forward in bearing the testimony of our Lord Jesus Christ, and trusting in Him completely. In addition, Pr Van Thawng Hup from First BPC, read the letter of greetings and encouragement from Bethel BPC, Melbourne (penned by Dn James who is the deacon-in-charge of Myanmar missions), to the brethren of Ngalti BPC. He also presented a token of appreciation and encouragement for the love gifts from First BPC to the pastor of Ngalti BPC and its five children Sunday school teachers. The thanksgiving service was followed by a happy time of thanksgiving dinner, and fellowship with one another.
