“…we were by nature the children of God’s wrath…”
1 Peter 2:9, But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
It is truly a blessing to be called a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation and a peculiar people. With this blessing, comes the responsibility!
There was a time when we were living in spiritual darkness. We were walking according to the power of the air (that is Satan), and following the course of the world, and we were by nature the children of God’s wrath. The word darkness speaks of both moral and intellectual darkness, which means we could not comprehend the truth and righteousness and this ignorance is manifested through the way we live. We were ignorant of the consequences of our sins, and we were heading for eternal hell, yet we thought everything was alright. We knew that we could not live forever on this earth, yet we kept building our earthly treasures. We knew that one day we would die, yet we did not want to think about the things of eternity. That is what it means to be in darkness.
Dear children, it was God who had called us out of this spiritual darkness, and brought us into His marvellous light. God had saved us through faith in Jesus Christ, and today, we are no longer ignorant. We not only know what is right and wrong, righteousness and sin, but we are also able to do that which is right. We have God’s Word as a lamp and light to guide us, and we have the Holy Spirit to empower us. Therefore, we must live a transformed life, to shew forth the praises of Him who had saved us.
