Proverbs 20:19
“…dangerous to be acquainted with…”
Proverbs 20:19, He that goeth about as talebearing revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
Two types of friends are dangerous to be acquainted with. Firstly, the “talebearers” are people who go about carrying untrue or true stories (with an evil intent). Secondly, the “gossipers” are people who enjoy revealing personal matters about others. Oftentimes both talebearers and gossipers will exaggerate, distort or add onto the facts. They would use their fair speeches to create conflicts, unhappiness and divisions. They create jealousies, anger and vengeance in peoples’ minds. They reveal secrets which they have been entrusted to. Ultimately, they break relationships!
Dear children, be careful of such people because oftentimes they will first compliment and commend you to win over your friendship and let your guards down. That is the meaning of flattereth. Then they will make you believe the things they say about others. If they are capable of sharing things and secrets of others, one day, they will share things and secrets about you as well. Do not entertain such people. Remember, it takes two persons in order for talebearers and gossipers to exist; the one who speaks and the one who listens. Do not have any part in talebearers and gossipers by giving your ears and time to them. When you do take, you will become a talebearer and gossiper whether directly or indirectly!
