Hebrews 10:25
Ps Paul Cheng
Hebrews 10:25, Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
At the point of conversion, the moment we believe in Jesus and receive Him as Lord and Personal Saviour, we are automatically ushered into the communion of the saints; we are (in a way) enrolled into a community of those who have made the same commitment to Christ; we become a member of the household of faith; we belong to the family of God; the called out ones – the Church.
Oh how we loved to take part in almost all of the activities of the Church, from Bible study to fellowship meetings; evangelism to prayer meetings in addition to regular attendance in the Lord’s Day service. But sad to say, as the years go by, many have become indifferent and uninvolved. It’s a sad reality that we are seeing in many churches today, even our own!
I. The Sad Reality: Neglect Of Meeting Together
It is interesting to note that this has been the case with some of the N.T. Christians. The writer to the Hebrews mentioned in our text, as the manner of some is. It tells us that some of God’s people then have been neglecting their commitment to the body of believers!
Though we are not told why they have forsaken the assembling together, we can think of some possible reasons: (a) fear of persecution; (b) lack or no interest in it; (c) doubts as to the necessity and propriety of this duty; (d) burdens of sin and cares of life; etc.
The same is true today though we can think of more reasons like (a) lack of interest for spiritual things; (b) misplaced or wrong priority; (c) carnality and worldliness; (d) conflict with fellow believers; (e) unyielding spirit.
For whatever reason, the writer of the Hebrews here said that we should not allow this thing to happen. Instead we should regard it as a sacred duty to meet together for the worship of God. And none of the reasons mentioned should deter us from this duty!
What many failed to realize is the sad reality that neglect of our commitment to the body of believers hinders our spiritual growth. And when the neglect is prolonged, it not only hinders spiritual growth; it results in spiritual stagnation and eventually spiritual starvation. It is very subtle – just when you think that everything’s fine with you by your non-involvement; sooner or later you realize that you have been slowly drifting if not departing from the faith!
II. The Sure Remedy: Commitment To The Body Of Believers
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Here we are commanded –
a. To meet together for the worship of God. The word used here translated as “assembling of ourselves together” means an act of assembling, or a gathering together, meeting together. We read of the church shortly after the Pentecost in Acts 2:41-42; Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. As we are commanded not to forsake the assembling together, it is implied that it is wrong to neglect it.
b. To exhort one another. That is, we gather together for mutual encouragement and mutual edification. Consider the following verses:
Hebrews 10:24; And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Hebrews 3:13; But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Romans 12:6-8; Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
1 Thessalonians 4:18; Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
1 Thessalonians 5:11; Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
Consider the blessing – we meet, worship, pray, bear one another’s burdens and grow together. All the more, we should commit ourselves to it for salvation is now nearer to us than when we first believed. The Lord is at hand. The end of all things is near.
Shalom,
Pastor Paul Cheng
