“…the builders would choose the best stone…”
Dear Children,
Have you ever built something using blocks before? When you are building something out of blocks, have you wondered what piece is the most in that building?
In ancient times, the builders would choose the best stone, known as the chief cornerstone.
The chief cornerstone is the first stone that was laid to build a house, therefore it is the most important stone. The stone will decide how the house is built. It also has to be strong because all the stones have to be built on it. If it is weak, the house will collapse. All the other stones that are built on top have to fit in well with the cornerstone, otherwise the house will not hold. Because of its importance, the stone is also the most precious stone.
1 Peter 2:6, Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
In this verse today, we can learn that God has chosen Jesus to be the cornerstone of the spiritual house, that is the church. He has been chosen to set the direction for the church to follow. Without Him, the church will collapse and will not stand. Therefore, the church has to abide and build upon Jesus.
We are, on the other hand, the lively stone that is used to build the spiritual house, that is the church. We are called lively because we now have eternal life through Jesus Christ. Since we are the stone that is built upon Him, we ought to be close to Him and to know His will. If the stones do not know the chief cornerstone at all, the stones will be laid down in the wrong way and cause the whole house to collapse.
So let us grow in the knowledge of our Lord and abide in Him like the lively stone built closely to the chief cornerstone, that our church will be the most faithful church.
