James 1:6-8
“…an important element attached to his asking…”
So far, we have learnt about what wisdom means, the need for wisdom, the promise of wisdom and the ways to receive wisdom. But does it mean that whenever the believer says those magical words, “Lord, I need wisdom,” and he will have wisdom? Most certainly not! There is an important element attached to his asking, and that is faith!
James 1:6-8, But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
Faith is to believe; and we must believe that God is the source of wisdom, and He is able to give us the wisdom that we need. There is nothing in God’s character that keeps Him from giving us the wisdom we need, but there is something in our character that keeps us from receiving it. And that is, our doubts!
To waver is to doubt. The doubter is a double minded man, he is unstable like a boat being tossed to and fro in the open sea, the boat goes up, down, sideways and even turning around, with absolutely no control. When the doubter makes a request, his request is not really a request at all because he foolishly does not believe that it will be honoured by God. Such a person should not think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord because he is unstable, he is inconsistent; he is someone who says something but does something else; he says he trusts God but turns to the world, he seeks biblical answers but does not apply those answers into his life. Such a person will always run from one opinion to another. His whole life will be messed up!
Dear children, when we seek for biblical counselling, and then seek for secular counselling, we will waver between two opinions. If we do that, we are double-minded, and like a boat tossed around wildly by the wind, we will not receive anything from God. If we need wisdom, we must prayerfully ask, and believe in God, and we will receive it!
