“…God allowed me to be a part of camp once again…”
For the first time in many years, my attendance at the annual YPG camp could not be taken for granted. Yet, God allowed me to be a part of camp once again. The few days spent together were most blessed for a few reasons.
Firstly, I thank God for being honest with us young people. Through the words of Solomon and other writers, conveyed by Pr Edsel and Ps Paul, the youth were informed that we inhabit a discrete chapter of our lives over which God has supreme claim. Contrary to popular belief, even among so-called Christians, our lives, let alone our childhood and youth days, are not ours to whimsically choreograph. To the rebel, these words agitate and frustrate, but to the child of God, these words are deeply humbling and compelling. What greater joy will a young person ever experience than the full surrender of their lives to the One for whom they were and are created?
Secondly, I thank God for evolving the YPG camp into what it is today. In many ways, both the YPG ministry at large and its annual camps have experienced a range of changes over the last few decades. Thank God for leading us to thoughtfully consider the needs of our current youth and how to best facilitate their personal and collective growth. Despite certain changes, we do, fundamentally, aim at the same goal via roughly the same method: conforming the spiritual lives of the next generation of Christians to the Scriptures. I believe that so many aspects of this ministry (why it exists, who it serves, how it functions, etc.) are summed up in the 5-day ordeal that is the YPG camp, for better or worse (which leads to my next point).
Thirdly, I thank God for using the camp to, to a certain extent, reveal each camper’s spiritual maturity. If you or I are ever tempted to believe that teenagers are too young to learn and appreciate spiritual realities, we’re wrong. This camp demonstrated to me the spiritual conditions of several of the youth. I was both deeply encouraged and discouraged, in others and in myself. Concentrated periods of worship, fellowship and service (enabled by the annual phenomenon of living together for a few days) help us discover what we and our peers are really made of. This is the kind of spiritual sharpening (Prov 27:17) and provoking (Heb 10:24) that I believe the Bible encourages, yet seems to take place all too infrequently. Hard, heartfelt, unexpected and ultimately invaluable conversations were had, enabled and catalysed, no doubt, by the Spirit of God to sanctify us young people. Such progress is hardly achieved nor measured by mere lackadaisical attendance many Christians including youth may offer at Bethel each week.
Please pray that I and my fellow youths will seriously reflect on the lessons God is teaching us, so that we’ll respond in faith to Him. As the lifecycle of the church goes, we will grow up (as many of you older than I already have) in this church, so we need your prayer and support in order to become the Christians God would have us be, and likewise to make Bethel a flourishing instrument of blessing. As I begin my second semester at FEBC, I especially covet your prayers for me, that I will serve the Lord faithfully and humbly here, knowing that my time as a “youth” is swiftly slipping away.
