“…especially when we are going through difficult times…”

Dear Children,
We have learned that God gave us songs so that we can praise Him and also learn spiritual truths that we can apply in our daily lives. Today, we will learn another wonderful purpose of hymns and spiritual songs—they bring comfort, especially when we are going through difficult times.
Let us read Acts 16:25, And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
Paul and Silas had faithfully preached the gospel in Philippi. However, after they cast a demon out of a girl who had been used by her owners to make money, they were arrested, beaten, and thrown into prison. They suffered both physically and emotionally. Yet, instead of complaining, they prayed and sang praises to God. As they sang, God gave them comfort and strength in the midst of their suffering.
The Bible also contains many songs that comfort God's people. One well-known example is Psalm 23, written by David. This beautiful psalm reminds us that the Lord is our Shepherd who lovingly cares for us and provides all that we need. Knowing this brings peace and comfort to our hearts.
Hymns can also encourage and comfort us. When we feel sad or discouraged, we can sing hymns such as He Is Able, reminding ourselves that God is able to heal the brokenhearted and set the captive free.
When was the last time you found comfort through the songs you sang? Let us strive to treasure the spiritual songs found in our hymn books and, above all, the inspired songs that God has given us in His own Word. May we always find comfort, hope, and strength in them.
