When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom. (Proverbs 11:2)

All the students were gathered at the stadium for the school sport’s day.  Everyone was eagerly waiting for the principal to make an important announcement.  The principal announced on the loudspeaker, “The prize for the best sportsman of the year goes to James.”  James was elated, as he smiled while walking up to the podium to collect his trophy.  Everyone clapped loudly.

But as the days went by, his friends noticed a great change in him; he had become proud.  To James, no one can be better than him, and everyone must be second to him.

Whenever his friends praised someone for doing well in any sports, James would say, “It isn’t great at all, or he won because the rest of the competitors are weak.  He can never beat me.”

The next year came, and it was the school sport’s day again.  This time, James did not win any trophies.  He thought he would surely win, but to his surprise, he came in last place in almost every event.  With all those prideful remarks that he had made and with no victory, James became extremely ashamed of himself.

Dear children, when pride cometh, then cometh shame.  We must never be proud because everything we have, our talents, abilities and skills, cometh from God.  As He graciously gives, He can also take away.  The Bible tells us that with the lowly is wisdom because he knows that God loves the humble and hates the proud.  Therefore, he always humbles himself.  Do you want to be a wise person?  If you do, then humble yourself and acknowledge God with reverence.

For the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. (Proverbs 1:7)
