James 1:5a
“…everyone needs wisdom…”
James 1:5a, If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God,
The original Greek word for if is a type of conditional clause that assumes the condition is true. In other words, it is a fact that we need wisdom. Some people may need more, while others may need less, but everyone needs wisdom. Everyone should recognise the need for wisdom.
The word lack means shortage. It is a fact that there will be a shortage of wisdom. The idea is not that we are totally without wisdom in a given situation. We may have some knowledge or principles to guide us in the situation, but we will find that we still have a shortage. We may know some general things, but when it comes down to the specific details, we just do not know what to do. For example, we know that we should trust God in every situation. But when we face a particular trial, and we need to make a decision; to go or not to go, to do or not do, we just do not know how to decide.
People tend to think they are wiser than they actually are, or they are stronger than they actually are, and they are happy to rely on themselves. Sometimes it takes just one trial to come into our lives to effectively drive us beyond our strength and abilities that we cry out to God and ask for His help. Trials are meant to release us from the bondage of self-reliance!
Dear children, God wants us to know that there is no believer who is without the need to ask Him for wisdom. We are all going to have a lack of wisdom, and we are all going to need wisdom. Therefore, we are to ask of God!
