John 1:29
“…a picture of Jesus…”
John 1:29, Behold, the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Christmas is a time whereby churches all over the world remember the birth of the Saviour of the world. Though nobody knows when Jesus was born, the early Christians had set aside a special day to commemorate His birth.
Long before Jesus came, when a person sinned, he had to bring an unblemished lamb to the priest to be killed. He was then forgiven instead of being punished. But the animal could never take away sin! It was a picture of Jesus who would one day come into this world, live a perfect life, and ultimately die for the sins of His people. So, all those lambs which were sacrificed in the Old Testament, pointed to the ultimate Lamb of God (Jesus) who would come. Therefore, by faith, all those believers in the Old Testament looked forward to the Lamb of God. That was the reason why when Jesus came in the New Testament, John the Baptist said of Him, “Look, He is the Lamb of God which the Old Testament had prophesied, who will take away the sin of the world!”
Dear children, Jesus had already come! Thus, today, by faith, we look backward to the cross; the Lamb of God who came for us and died on the cross at Calvary to take away your sins and mine. Have you believed in Jesus, the Lamb of God?
