Matthew 5:7
Matthew 5:7, Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
To be merciful is to give help to the afflicted and to rescue the helpless. It is compassion in action! For example, if you see a hungry beggar in the street, you may have compassion in your heart, but it takes mercy to show that compassion. So, you buy a packet of food and give it to him.
Jesus taught us the classic example to be merciful. He said to His disciples, “You gave me food when I was hungry, gave me drink when I was thirsty, clothed me when I was naked, visited me when I was sick, and helped me when I was in prison.” The disciples were puzzled, “When did we feed you, give you drink, clothe you, visit and help you?” Jesus said,...Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me (Matthew 25:35-40). That is to be merciful, or compassion in action!
Dear children, when we are merciful to the people, they may not return our kindness with mercy. Just like Jesus was merciful to heal the lame, blind, dumb, deaf and raised the dead, yet instead of returning His mercy, they crucified Him. But Jesus promised, for they shall obtain mercy. God is the One who will return to you. Is it not comforting to know that though men may forget your kind deeds, God never forgets?
