augustine said… if a person will not honour their parenst, then no one will be spared (or something like that)
most people think they understand this commandment, but there is more than meets the eye…
disregard for one authority will always be accompanied by disregard for other authorities. if a child has not been taught to honour his parents, it is unlikely that he will have any regard for the church or the state.
salvation is to believe in the one who has borne the guilt of our sins on himself.
jesus kept this commandment too.
what about the chief priests and scribes?
by his life, Jesus taught us to honour the God-given authorities. in the family, the church and the state. he set the ultimate example for us to follow.
are we better than God to disrespect those God-given authorities when even our Lord Jesus obeyed?
tonight we will be focusing on honouring our parents
the word honour means weighty. to honour one’s parents is to give weight to their position. it is to give them the recognition they deserve for their god-given authority. it is to respect, it is to value our parents are God’s gift to us. we must never think we have given too much weight, respect and honour. it is always how much we have fallen short. sadly today, rebelling against one’s parents is a common sin, especially in the western world.
for everyone who curses his father and mother, his blood shall be on his head
if a man has a son who is stubborn and rebellious, who refuses to obey his parents, to accept their discipline, all the people should come together and stone him to death. it is a very serious sin.
in the new testament, disobedeicne to parents is listed as one of the signs that we are living in the end times
honouring our parents takes many forms, but it must always begin in the heart.
we must not just show na external compliance to these authorities, but we must truly desire in our hearts to honour our parents.
we must recognise that our parents are given to us by God, for our good. for our faitha nd for our lives. it is our duty ot honour our parents. they have devoted their entire lives to raise us up.
dear children, your parents will always have your welfare in their hearts.
you will always be the same precious child in their eyes.
parents deserve to be listened to because of the wealth of their life experiences. you must realise that they are more experienced then you are.
take heed, give weight, listen to what they’re about to tell you. they have something to teach you
do not despise them, nor treat their counsels are nagging. one day that nagging will stop if you consider it nagging.
prov 23:22 says this, hearken unto their father who begot thee and despise not thy mother when she is old. do not despise her. love her, honour her, by taking care of her.
in doing so, you are setting an example for your children to follow.
we must never let our honour for our parents supercede our honour for God
a word of advice for those with unbelieving parnets, you have a spiritual family. you can run to them. but even then you must still show your parents honour and respect
do you reliase that honouring our parents in our own best interest?
this is the first commandment with a promise. this promise is intended to give special encouagement to the children. honouring our parents ought to be a spontaneous thing, a natural thing. but God knows how hard it is for us to honour our parents.
how can the promise be applied into our lives?
3 considerations.
- there is physical dimension to us. it helps to enrich our lives, to protect our lives, to keep us safe from the many sins that will affect us.
(paraphrasing) going to the promised land was only possible because of their honouring their parents. this was the REWARD
when we obey, we will experience peace in the family, in the church our spiritual family
we will experience his blessing if only we will obey this commandment.
