hidden page for editing transcriptOur text for today's message is taken from Exodus 37:2–29, and it is about the altar of incense. This passage was also recorded in Exodus 30:1–10. Exodus 30 described God's command to build it, and here in Exodus 37, the children of Israel - or to be precise, Bezaleel - actually built it.
The altar of incense was not very large. It was about one and a half feet square and about three feet high. Like the other furniture in the Tabernacle, it was made of shittim wood and covered with gold, including the top and the sides as well. It had four horns, one on each of the four corners. It was designed to be portable, so there were rings on the two sides of the altar, allowing it to be lifted with poles and carried wherever God would lead. As the children of Israel moved from place to place in the wilderness, the Tabernacle would move along with them.
Every morning and evening, the high priest Aaron would offer the incense on the altar. While the incense was offered in the Holy Place, the people were gathered outside the courtyard, and they were praying, and the high priest was also praying. In Psalm 141:1–2, the psalmist King David said, “LORD, I cry unto thee: make haste unto me; give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee. Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.” Here David was crying out for help, and he was asking God to hear his prayers. Interestingly, he made a connection between his prayers and the daily rituals of burning incense in the Temple. So, the significance of the burning incense rising up was like the believer’s prayers ascending unto God's throne in Heaven.
Now, it was the responsibility of the high priest to represent the people to offer the incense, or prayers, to God. Today we do not have the high priest, nor do we need one, because we go straight to God through Jesus Christ, our great High Priest. That is the reason why we always end our prayers, ‘In Jesus’ name, Amen.’ So, we want to approach this passage by focusing on the difference between all the human high priests and Jesus Christ, our great High Priest - why His priesthood was a greater and far more superior priesthood.
I would like you to turn with me to Hebrews 7:20–28. We will be considering this passage in Hebrews. The title of our message is Jesus, the Greater High Priest.
I. It Is Sworn By God
Firstly, the high priesthood of Christ is superior because it is sworn by God. Verses 20–21 of Hebrews 7, “And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest: (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedek).”
When Aaron and his sons took up their priestly duties, it was not on the basis of God’s oath, but rather by God’s instruction. God instructed Moses to take his brother Aaron, along with his sons, from amongst the Israelites to serve as priests. They did have an elaborate ceremony, but there was no oath. God did not swear to Aaron or any other priests that their priesthood would last forever. The priests lived and died, and other priests took over. But God did swear about His Son. In Psalm 110:4, it says, “The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedek”
Who was Melchisedek? In Genesis 14:18–20, we are told that Melchisedek was a king and a priest who lived in the time of Abraham, and his ancestry was a mystery. He was the king of Salem. Salem was the ancient name for Jerusalem. ‘Salem’ or ‘shalom’ means peace. In other words, Melchisedek was known as the King of Peace. This is interesting because Jesus was also known as the Prince of Peace. He lived many centuries before the priesthood of Aaron was established. The priesthood of Aaron began in the time of Moses, and it ended when the Temple was destroyed in AD 70.
But the priesthood of Melchisedek had no beginning and no ending. Therefore, Melchisedek’s priesthood was superior to Aaron’s priesthood because his was eternal and perpetual, while Aaron’s was temporal. Melchisedek was a king, but Aaron was not. Melchisedek was a priest of the Most High God. The Levites were the priestly line. Aaron was a descendant of Levi, and so he was qualified to be the high priest.
But Jesus was not from the tribe of Levi; He was from the tribe of Judah. The tribe of Judah was a royal line. King David was from the tribe of Judah. So Jesus could fulfil the prophecy of being a King. But how could He fulfil the prophecy of being a Priest? Well, He did not come from the order of Aaron; He came from the order of Melchisedek. This is what this verse means.
As humans living in this world of liars, we know that our words cannot be dependable. People commit themselves to things without thinking carefully, and when they are unable to keep their words, they say it is not important, or it doesn’t matter. It is hard to believe every word people say. That is why when they give evidence in court, they have to put their hands on the Bible and swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth - ‘so help me God’. That is an oath, and the purpose is to bind them to the truth.
But an oath was not necessary for God because His word alone was enough. God does not need to say, ‘I really mean it this time.’ He means what He says, and He says what He means all the time. So, what was the purpose of God making an oath? The purpose of the oath was for us. Even though God is true all the time, because He understood humanity, He was willing to give an oath so that we can have the absolute certainty that His promise is true. And here, God was willing to give an oath so that we can be totally assured in our hearts that indeed Jesus is the Messiah.
Hebrews 7:22 says,”By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.” In other words, in this way, Jesus was made a surety, or a guarantor, of a better testament. When the Bible says a ‘better testament’, it does not mean that the Old Testament, or Old Covenant, is not good. The Old Testament is good, it serves the purpose of pointing the people to the promised Messiah. In fact, without the Old Testament, you and I would never know that Jesus is the promised Messiah.
But in the New Testament, the Messiah has come. So in this sense, the New Testament is better simply because the Old Testament was incomplete. The Old Testament is good, but the New Testament is better because Christ has come. In the Old Testament, the sinner would bring a sacrificial animal for the priest to spill its blood for his sins. Though that animal points to the ultimate Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, whom we believe in, it was a repeated spiritual exercise. They had to do it again and again and again.
But we believers in the New Testament trust in the finished work of Christ on the Cross to pay the penalty of sins. And all our sins, past, present, and future, are completely washed away and forgiven. And our guarantor is not the unblemished animal, but the perfect Jesus, who will save His people from their sins. That is why it is a better testament.
Jesus was the mediator of the New Covenant, and He provided us with eternal life. When you have a covenant, someone must execute it. Jesus was not just the executor of the covenant; He also guarantees it. He became a surety for it. We can never receive the forgiveness of sins and all the promises of God unless Jesus is our guarantor. When He is our guarantor, we will never lose our salvation.
Dear friend, are you still an unbeliever rejecting the Lord Jesus Christ? Come Judgment Day, though, you would have to stand before the Almighty God without a guarantor, without a Saviour. You can hope for your sins to be forgiven. You can long for your good works to save you. You can wish that God may compromise His righteousness and invite you into His Kingdom, but all your hopes and wishes will be empty because there’s only one guaranteed way to enter into Heaven, and that is Jesus Christ must be your Lord and Saviour. If you reject Him, you have no surety.
II. It Is Permanent
Our second point is: the priesthood of Christ is superior because it is permanent. Look at verse 23, ”And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death.” The people who lived in the Old Testament did not have the full assurance in their priests because they all died. The priest died, and others replaced them, and those who replaced them would also die. No man can live forever. Josephus, the Jewish historian, said about eighty-three priests served from the time of Aaron until the destruction of the Temple in AD 70. It could be more, we don’t know. But the point is that the priesthood of Aaron was not permanent.
Whether they were good or bad, their ministries ended when they died. This same principle applies to pastors, elders, deacons, parents, and so forth. Whether we are good or bad, whether we have done well or not, our ministries come to an end when we die. Verse 24 says, “But this man” - referring to Christ - “because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. The word unchangeable speaks of the permanence of Christ’s priesthood.
Take a moment and consider those people living in the Old Testament times. They needed the high priest to intercede for them. Then the high priest was taken over by another high priest, and he was taken over by yet another high priest, and it went on and on and on. Some high priests were good. They could relate with the people better than the rest. Some high priests were able to pray eloquently, while others could only read their prayers. Their abilities varied from one to another. But in Christ Jesus, we have the perfect High Priest. He knows us and understands us perfectly. He has heard our prayers. He remembers every single one of our prayers, and He has answered them.
Can you imagine engaging an attorney to defend you? And he studied your case, did a lot of work to compile the evidence, gathering eyewitness accounts and testimonies. That translates into a lot of money and expenses. But after all the work, the attorney died, and you have to engage another new attorney who has to start all over again to gather information about you, which costs a lot of time, energy, resources, and money. That will never happen to our Advocate and Intercessor, Jesus Christ. He will be on the job at every moment for all eternity.
Verse 25, “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” The only way to be saved is to come to God through Jesus Christ. And when you do that, He is able to save you to the uttermost. The word uttermost is an amazing word to describe our salvation. Whoever we are and whatever we have done, no matter how wretched our sins may be, whether it be murder, perversion, betrayal, lying, jealousy, or hateful gossip, Christ can save us completely to the uttermost.
As Romans 1:16 says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Notice the words are in the present tense, which means it is not just the initial work of salvation but the subsequent work of salvation as well. In other words, it is not just our justification but also our sanctification.
Christ saves you and me not only at the point of our conversions, but day by day and moment by moment throughout all time. His eternal saving work helps us to grow in sanctification and become more and more like Him. Christ is not some dead martyr whose body is lying in some unmarked grave in Israel. He rose from the dead, and He ever liveth to make intercession for us.
How does Christ intercede for us? The Church Father Chrysostom gave a very helpful analogy. Allow me to quote him: ‘A young boy whose father was away on a trip wanted to present his father with something that would please him. His mother sent him to the garden to gather a bouquet of flowers. The little boy returned, gathering a bouquet of flowers as well as weeds because he could not tell the difference. But when his father returned home, he was presented with a beautifully arranged bouquet because the mother had intervened, removing all the weeds. The prayers of the church are not a thing of beauty as they leave the lips of the saints as they start their way heavenward. They are a mixed bag of weeds with a few stray flowers. However, when they arrive on God’s throne in Heaven, thanks to the intercession of Christ, they are nothing but beautiful flowers.’
Indeed, our prayers are weak and frail. We cannot even form our thoughts right. How much more are words? And worst of all, oftentimes we pray not in accordance to God's will. But praise be to our Lord Jesus Christ, our great High Priest, who takes our weak prayers. He satisfies it and presents it to the Heavenly Father like a beautiful bouquet of flowers. And each time we pray, it will be like the incense burning and rising up, ascending unto God's throne in Heaven, in Jesus' name. What a comforting thought about Christ interceding for us.
III. His Person Is Perfect
Finally, the priesthood of Christ is superior because His person is perfect. Verse 26, “For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens.” In order to be a high priest in the Old Testament, there were several criteria. Firstly, they had to be the direct descendants of Aaron. Secondly, they must not have any physical defects.
Leviticus 21 gives us a list of the physical defects that could disqualify the person to be a priest. For example, he must not be blind. He must not be lame. And he must not have a flat nose. However, no matter how strict they tried to abide by those physical requirements, none of the priests was perfect. But Jesus Christ, our eternal great High Priest, was perfect in every sense of the word.
Jesus was holy from the very beginning, and for all eternity He is holy. He was born into this world holy. He was not capable of sin. Jesus was harmless. He did not harm anyone. His entire life was committed to doing good to others. He healed the sick, raised the dead, taught the people wonderful doctrines about God. Never once did He harm anyone. Yet they crucified Him.
Jesus was undefiled. He was free from any moral and spiritual contamination. Think about this, for almost 33 years, He was in the world mingling continually with sinners and being tempted continually by Satan. Yet He did not contract even the least of sins. He was undefiled. By way of illustration, He was like the sun that shines into the dirtiest and smelliest puddle of water and does not lose her radiance and glory. So Christ lived His life in this dark and sinful world without ever losing His beauty and purity. Before Christ came and after Christ, there was never such a High Priest who was undefiled.
Christ was separate from sinners. It does not mean that He does not come into contact with anyone. His earthly parents, His brothers, His friends, His disciples, and all the people He encountered were sinful. He ate with them, travelled with them, and dwelt with them. But His nature was totally different, totally separated from theirs. He was 100% man and 100% God. And because He was holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, Jesus was made higher than the Heavens. He was exalted above the Heavens.
Jesus, our great High Priest, is able to represent us before the holy God because He is perfect. At the same time, He became us. He took on human form. That tells us how much He knows us, how much He understands us, and how much He is able to sympathise with our weaknesses. No one understands us as much as Him. He was absolutely different from all the other high priests.
Verse 27 says, “Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this He did once, when He offered up Himself.” All the other high priests were sinful. They had to first offer sacrifices for themselves daily before they could represent the people because they were sinners. But Christ did not do that. He was without sin. There was no sin to be forgiven.
His one sacrifice of Himself on the cross of Calvary was sufficient to save the world. Even if the whole world were to come to Him for salvation, His death on the cross and the shedding of His precious blood is able to save everyone. But they must come to God through Him. That is the only way He is able to save them.
Dear friend, some people think that it is sufficient just to share the gospel with our unbelieving loved ones and simply leave it there. But unless they come to Jesus, the gospel cannot save them. Jesus will only save them if they come to Him. If we are unsure that our unbelieving loved ones are saved, then we must not stop sharing the gospel until they believe.
Finally, verse 28 says: “For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.” The law of Moses appoints men as high priests. But no matter how sincere those men might be, they all had infirmities. They were weak. But the oath of God, which came much later than the law during the time of David who wrote Psalm 110, appointed the perfect High Priest.
Have you ever visited your loved ones in hospital? You watch them as they languish in their deathbeds and their lives slowly fade away. You are devastated, right? You are sad and heartbroken. You would have done anything in your power to bring them to perfect health. You are completely willing, but you are not able to do that. You have no power.
Perhaps many of the high priests in the Old Testament were sincere and willing to save the people from their sins, always crying out for them. But being sincere alone cannot save. You need a superior priest - one that is sworn by God, one that is permanent, not temporal, who liveth to make intercession for us for all eternity. One that is perfect, and there is only one such High Priest, and He is none other than Jesus Christ, the perfect greater High Priest. Do not harden your heart. Come and believe in the only one who can save you and will continue to intercede for you. Come and believe in Jesus. Today is the day of salvation. Let us pray.
Our Father in Heaven, we give You thanks that we are able to consider this portion of Scriptures in Hebrews 7:20–28, as we consider the high priest offering the incense on the altar in the holy place. Today we do not have high priests, nor do we need one, because we go straight to Thee through our Lord Jesus, our great High Priest. And our Lord Jesus is a greater and far more superior High Priest because His appointment was sworn by Thee, and He, being our great High Priest, is permanent. High priests lived and died, and they were replaced by others who also died. The same applies to all of us as humans living on this earth, whether they be pastors, preachers, elders, deacons, Sunday school teachers, parents, and so forth. Once we die, our ministries come to an end.
But our Lord Jesus, for all eternity, He continues forever and ever. And Thou hast also taught us that our Lord Jesus’ priesthood is superior because He is perfect. There’s none perfect, no, not one. Only our Lord is holy. He is harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and also exalted above the Heavens. He is truly the greater High Priest, and we are so thankful that we can come to Him, and He always hears us, intercedes for us, knows us, understands us better than we know and understand ourselves. And we pray that with this understanding we will also be more prayerful, knowing that He ever liveth to make intercession for all of us. We praise and thank Thee, and we pray all this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
