Introduction
I prayerfully decided to pause in our study on the book of Colossians because since we would be having our 40th anniversary, I would like to preach some messages pertaining to the church.
So today we want to consider the last part of the first epistle to the Thessalonians. When we write secular letters, we often end with greetings like, please send my warmest regards to your family or I wish you all the best. In a divinely inspired letter like this, it was typical for the Apostle Paul to end this letter with a prayer.
That was why Paul prayed in 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, which would be our text for today's message. 1 Thessalonians 5:23. “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.” The Lord bless the reading of His holy and sacred word.
The way Paul prayed for the Thessalonians should also be the same way we ought to pray for our church. That is why I've titled the message as, ‘Praying for our church Part Two.’
Do you realise that the things we used to think of most of the time, the things that are always on our minds, they are the things that are of greatest concern to us. The things that we often pray for are the things that are of great importance to us. Things like our physical good health and strength, our jobs and financial securities, our families, our children's education or our marital relationships etc.
But what about sanctification? What about holiness? Do we ever pray that our children be godly or the people in the church be holy or we ourselves be more and more like Christ? Sadly, very seldom we pray for sanctification.
The word sanctification is a wonderful word. It is a theological and biblical word. Sadly, many churches try to shy away from some of these theological words because they would simplify these words so that the people could understand. Words like sovereignty, providence, justification, sanctification, glorification, and so forth. We must realise that you and I cannot improve on the words in the holy scriptures. But instead of avoiding such words, we need to study them so that we can better understand the word of God.
Today we want to learn something about sanctification which is also the theme for our home care group messages.
To sanctify means to be made holy, be consecrated, be separated from what is sinful, to be devoted to the Lord and to be set apart unto Him. So it involves the idea of separation. It involves dedication and it involves purity.
Sanctification is connected to our salvation. If you are a believer, an elect of God, who has chosen you even before the foundation of the world, then He will perform His sanctifying work in your life.
Allow me to explain this. At the point of our conversions, when we first embraced Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we have been justified in our sins. God sanctified us by setting us apart from sin onto Himself. He separated us from darkness and unto His marvellous light. He set us apart from unbelief onto faith. That is our positional sanctification whereby God declared us to be righteous by virtue of what our Lord Jesus has done for us on the cross at Calvary.
One day we would be perfectly free from sin. We would be in perfect fellowship with God. And that day awaits us in the future. The day of glorification, the day of resurrection, the day when we see our Saviour face to face, we will be perfectly sanctified. That is our ultimate glorification.
Progressive sanctification
So what is in between? What is in between our justification and our glorification? Sanctification. As long as we live our lives on this earth in this mortal body, we do not change overnight. We are constantly being sanctified if we are true believers. We are transformed and changed progressively and that is our progressive sanctification. So positionally we are sanctified. Ultimately we would be sanctified but in the meantime we are being sanctified progressively every day of our lives.
So here Paul was praying about a present work that needed to be done at this present moment while the Thessalonians were living their lives in this world. When the word sanctify is being used in the present tense, it always refers to a progressive work, something that is still ongoing. It is not yet finished and complete.
So if you are a believer, you have been justified, saved, and declared righteous because of the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. But there's still work to be done in your life. There is no such thing as someone who has been justified and not being sanctified. Everyone who is a believer is being sanctified.
Therefore, Paul was praying for the believers at Thessalonica, not for their positional sanctification because they were already believers. He was praying for their progressive sanctification all the way until their ultimate sanctification.
God of Peace
How do we know? Because of the phrase, “unto the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ”. That is about the rapture and that is in the future. So Paul was praying for their progressive sanctification and he said, “And the very God of peace sanctify you holy.”
Paul could have used the phrase the God of love or the God of grace or the God of mercy. But interestingly, he used the phrase the God of peace. Why did he do that? Peace has to do with our salvation. You see, without peace, we would be enemies of God. Because of our sins, we are not naturally at peace with God. We are at war with God. We are at war with each other and we are always at war with ourselves. That is why we experience much misery and there's so much unrest and chaos in this world.
It is Christ who has broken down the enmity between God and men through His death and the shedding of his precious blood. So God is the source of true peace and that is why he is called the God of peace.
Dear friend, if you are an unbeliever, you are not at peace with God. You may think that you have peace, but you are not at peace with God. In fact, you are an enemy of God. But He can give you this peace if you will come to Him through Jesus Christ for salvation. Apart from Christ there is no peace. One day you will die and you will die as an enemy of God. You will stand before him in the horror of your sins on judgment day and be sent to eternal damnation.
As believers, we not only have the God of peace, but we also experience the peace of God. Though life is filled with trials and troubles, at times we may be overwhelmed by worries and anxieties, we need to trust completely in what God has done for our salvation and we need to continuously trust in him. If we do that, Philippians 4:7 said, “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
There may be troubles and afflictions and troubles of all sorts, but you will have the peace of God guarding and keeping your hearts and your minds through our Lord Jesus Christ. What a blessed promise.
I. Sanctification Is An Expression Of Our Love
Let us learn some valuable lessons about sanctification from this passage because this is how we ought to pray for our church. ““And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly.”
Firstly, sanctification is an expression of our love. The apostle Paul loved the people and he had already expressed his love for the Thessalonians throughout his letters.
What does a pastor want for his people? What does a parent want for his or her child? What does a Sunday school teacher want for the little ones? If we truly have this love for our brothers and sisters in Christ, then this must be our main concern. That they may be sanctified.
Do you realise that sometimes we can be so concerned about the number of spiritual activities we have been attending? We can be so bogged down by the routines of attending those fellowship meetings and ministries. So much so that we do not even know why we are doing what we are doing. We are just going through the motion. We forget our main concern and our main goal.
If you are a parent, what is the goal and aim of your parenting? As parents, often times we will get so frustrated with the behaviour of our children that we will discipline them and even lose our temple and shout at them. But behind the screaming, what do we really want? Is it just about our children behaving themselves and doing what we think is right?
If you are a Sunday school teacher, what is the goal and aim of you preparing the Sunday school lessons? Is it just because of filling in the slot because it happens that you are the one assigned to do the Sunday school for that week. Is that all that is to it? If you are a preacher, what is your goal and aim? Is it just to fill the pull pit and then finish the one hour of preaching?
Our goal and aim is always about this, that souls will be saved and the people will be sanctified. The people whom God has placed under our cares are growing in sanctification, in holiness and becoming more and more like Christ. If this is your main aim and goal, then you should pray, right?
II. Sanctification Is A Supernatural Work
Sanctification is a supernatural work. Notice the phrase says, “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly,” which means God Himself is the one who can and will sanctify you.
I want you to consider this statement very seriously. God is personally involved in the development of you as a spiritual person. He is personally involved in your sanctification in you being holy. Can you fathom that? God himself is working in your life to make you into the person He wants you to be, into the person that pleases Him. God is the one who produces sanctification.
You can have the most theologically trained pastor or you can have the most knowledgeable parent or you can have the most qualified Sunday school teacher. But if God is not sanctifying the person you are ministering to, that person would not be sanctified. We can spend all our time and efforts creating the best programs in the church, but you and I can never create spiritual growth. Only God alone creates the growth. This will teach us whom we ought to depend on.
So as we pray for sanctification, we ask ourselves, who is going to sanctify us? How are we going to be sanctified? The God of peace is the one who will sanctify us. God alone produces fruit. He may bless some in the church with spiritual gifts to teach others about discipleship and sanctification, but they are at best His instruments. Only He alone produces sanctification.
How does God sanctify us? Primarily God sanctifies us through the wonderworking of His holy spirit. And the instrument in which the Holy Spirit uses to sanctify us is through the Bible, the word of God. Ephesians 5:26 said, “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.”
That is why you and I must never neglect the word of God and then expect to grow. We cannot neglect the reading of the Bible, the study, meditation and memorising of the word, hearing the word and then expect ourselves to grow in sanctification. That will never happen.
God is the author of the Bible. He's the one who teaches the word of God. He's the one who uses the word of God and empowers us to walk in His truth in sanctification, in holiness.
III. God Involves People To Help In The Sanctification
Next, God involves people to help in the sanctification. Do you realise that God has gifted certain people in the church with spiritual gifts to help others in their sanctification, in their spiritual growth? God wants us to grow in the context of the church family. We are a spiritual family. That is why we have pastors, teachers, elders, and deacons.
Take a moment and think of our natural family. We have our fathers, our mothers and children. The father is the one who leads. The mother is the one who submits and assist as the helper and the children obey the parents. As the children grow and have their own families, they in turn will lead and teach their own families. And this cycle is repeated as long as our Lord Jesus would tarry in His return.
In a similar fashion, that is how God deals with the church family. God has blessed us with evangelists, pastors and teachers. They have lived and they have died. And God raised up other evangelists, pastors and teachers. They continued to live and died. And then God will raise others.
For what purpose? Well, Ephesians 4:12 said, “For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.”
And for how long? “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:13.)
Perfect does not mean sinless. It means a complete spiritually mature person. And none of us can ever reach the level of our Lord Jesus Christ. We can only reach certain measures of His stature. We will grow to be more and more like Him. But we can never be Him.
The pastors and teachers are to teach and disciple the people so that they may grow in the knowledge of Christ. Be sanctified and mature spiritually.
When we look around ourselves, we can see people within the church of different levels of spiritual maturity. Some people are so good at considering others. This person is not spiritual. That person is spiritual. This person does not behave like a Christian. That person surely is a Christian.
People are very good at looking at others. But what about themselves? Have we ever asked ourselves how am I growing as a Christian? Am I living a sanctified life?
Some people will gauge spiritual maturity by ascertaining how much the believer knows the Bible or how prayerful he is or how he's serving the Lord, how much time he spends in the fellowship group meetings etc.
While all these spiritual activities are good, the best answer is we measure our lives against the life of Jesus Christ, the perfect God man. We can never be like Christ as I mentioned before but we can grow to become more and more like him and that is what you and I should live our lives.
IV. Sanctification Is A Thorough Work
Sanctification is a thorough work. Look at the phrase “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly.” The word “wholly” means entirely or completely.
“And I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Allow me to say this. This is a verse that the dichotomy and trichotomy controversy would surface and often quoted and debated.
Basically those who believe in trichotomy would argue that man is made up of three parts body, soul and spirit. Those who believe in dichotomy say that man is made up of only two parts. Body, soul and spirit are one. Soul and spirit are used interchangeably.
We believe in dichotomy. Man is made up of only two parts. Body, soul or spirit. One is material, the body, the other is non-material, the soul or spirit.
That is why 2 Corinthians 5:8 said, “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” Take note what is absent from the body and what is present with the Lord - the soul or the spirit.
If we are going to embrace trichotomy which means man is made up of three parts simply based on 1 Thessalonians 5:23 then what are we going to do when we come to verses like, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength”? (Mark 12:30) Does it mean that man has four parts? Most certainly not.
So what Paul meant here is completely, thoroughly, entirely, every facet of our inner man and our physical man be set apart unto God. In other words, you be set apart unto God. Be sanctified. So may God change your thinking. May God change your attitude. May God change your motives and choices so that in every way your life will not reflect the way of the world but will reflect the way of Jesus Christ. May the Lord sanctify you completely, wholly. That is what it means. Wherever we are lacking, that is where God would do his sanctifying work in us.
Take a moment and think about this. Our thinking needs to improve, right? Our attitudes needs to improve. Our minds need to change. Can anyone say that his or her motives are always true and sincere? No man can. Which means God will continue to do His sanctifying work in our lives. He is not finished with us yet. He is still working in us.
V. Sanctification Is A Preserving Work
Next sanctification is a persevering work - “your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless.”
To preserve is to guard and keep. We have been commanded to guard our hearts because out of it comes the issues of life. We are commanded to guard our tongues because it is like a fire. It will destroy us. We have been commanded to guard our thoughts because out of it will be manifested into our actions and behaviours.
God is the only one who is able to preserve, guard and keep us. If God were to withdraw His preserving grace from us, even for the brief moment, we are finished. The God who has saved us will continue to save us and preserve us. The way we are preserved and kept in the Christian life is through sanctification.
Since the day of your conversion, when you embrace Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, God has already begun this sanctifying work in you. And where there is sanctification, there must be this transformed life. There must be this radical change in your life.
A story was told of a young girl who accepted Christ as her Saviour and she applied for membership in the local church.
The pastor asked her, “Were you a sinner before you received the Lord Jesus into your life?”
“Yes,” she replied.
“Well, are you still a sinner?” The pastor asked.
The girl replied. “To tell you the truth, I feel I am a greater sinner than before.”
“Then what real change have you experienced?”
“I don't quite know how to explain it,” she said, “Except I used to be a sinner running after sin, but now that I'm saved, I'm a sinner running away from sin.”
How true. There must be this radical change in our lives if God is doing His sanctifying work in us.
VI. Our Great Responsibility In Our Own Sanctification
Next, our great responsibility in our own sanctification.
Indeed, God has blessed us with all spiritual blessings. Everything that pertains to life and godliness, He has given to us through our Lord Jesus Christ. We always have needs. We are always lacking. That is why we depend on the Lord Jesus moment by moment, day by day. There will never come a time whereby we do not need him.
But that does not mean that we do not need to do anything when it comes to our sanctification. Just sit and do nothing and let God do his work. We have a great responsibility in our own sanctification, in our own holiness and godliness, in our commitment to live a righteous life.
Listen to the words of 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4. “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour.”
It is our responsibility to abstain from sin and fornication. It is our responsibility to know how to control our vessel or our body to exercise self-control to say no when it comes to sin. If we allow this body to commit adultery, if we allow this tongue to gossip and slander, if we allow this mind to be filled with immoral thoughts and wicked things, if we allow these hands to steal, then we are not living a sanctified life, but a sinful life.
We have a responsibility. There is God's sovereignty and human responsibility in play in our sanctification. Rather than yielding to temptation through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and His word, we seek to live a blameless life. And God will preserve us blameless until when? Until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, until the rapture of the church, until Jesus comes in the clouds for us.
To be blameless does not mean that we are sinless, for no man is perfect. To be blameless means to be above reproach. In other words, our Christian testimony should not be in question. There should be nothing which people can accuse us of. Yes, we may have sinned, but we repent. We do not remain in sin. We should always maintain a good and upright reputation, never to give the enemies of the gospel reasons to attack our Christian faith.
What about you, my friend? Have you lived such a life? Have you been endeavouring to live such a life?
VII. Our Sanctification Is Certain
Finally, our sanctification is certain.
Look at the last phrase, “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.” As believers, we have been called. We have been justified. Our sins have been forgiven and washed by the precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are being sanctified on the daily basis. And one day we will be sanctified perfectly, completely.
God will not send someone else to complete it. He will not send an angel to complete it. He Himself will complete it personally in and through our lives by His spirit.
Philippians 1:6 said, “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you” - saving you - “will perform it” - which means will complete it - “until the day of Jesus Christ.” This is God's pledge to every believer. Every one of us.
The God who has sanctified us at our conversions will continue to sanctify us every day of our lives and ultimately He will perfectly sanctify us at our glorification. He will perform it, complete it by Himself.
When a person claimed to be a Christian, there would be some changes in his life, especially when he came from an immoral background or a background of unbelievers. If he was a drug addict, he might stop taking drugs, if he was an alcoholic, he might give up alcohol. If he was a gambler, he might give up gambling. If he was an adulterer, he might turn away from his immoral lifestyle. We all have heard some of these life-changing testimonies, but sad to say, many professed believers just stop there.
What do we mean by that? They do not go on to live a sanctified life. They do not deal with the other sins in their lives which may not be that obvious. Sins like pride, bitterness, anger, envy, jealousy, etc. All they focused on were the obvious sins like drug taking, alcohol, drinking, living an adulterous life. But what about the other sins?
Wholly means completely every aspects of our lives, not just one. So if you and I truly understand the meaning of sanctification in our lives, then we ought to know that it is a supernatural work. God is personally involved in our spiritual development as a Christian. We also have a responsibility to respond to it. Then the question is, how then can we not change? God forbids.
Are you a believer? How can you be assured of your salvation? How can you be assured of the salvation of your children? Just simply by the profession of their faith? We are assured of our salvation when we see God's spirit and God's work working in our lives sanctifying us on a daily basis.
And the Bible tells us, it is “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD.” (Zechariah 4:6). So it is the wonderworking of God's spirit and His work in our lives sanctifying us.
So this is what you and I must pray for our church that Bethel BP church will be sanctified. The pastor cannot do it. The elders and deacons cannot do it. Nor can the members do it. Only God alone creates sanctification and we simply responds to His supernatural work in obedience and then we will be able to see His sanctifying work in our lives.
Once we see that happening in our lives and we are growing from day to day from strength to strength from faith to faith, then we are assured in our hearts that we are truly the children of God. What a blessing.
Closing prayer
Let us pray.
Our Father in heaven, we give thanks for this opportunity for us to learn how we ought to pray for our church. As we have begun last week, we continue to learn how we ought to pray. And this morning, Thou has taught us the way the Apostle Paul prayed for the Thessalonians in regards to their sanctification. This ought to be the same way we pray for our church. That Bethel BP church be sanctified. That the members, the regular worshippers who desire to live this sanctified life.
And Thou has taught us all the valuable lessons about what is the true meaning of sanctification. Help us to apply all this truth into our lives. For we have only one life to live. And we want to live this one life in sanctification, in holiness, in righteousness, and godliness, all to the glory of Thee.
And Thou who has begun this good work in us by saving us at our conversions will continue to do Thy good work in us in sanctifying us and Thou has pledged this promise that Thou will perform it, complete it, bring it to the ultimate sanctification which is our glorification at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. And this is something that we cling on to a blessed hope, a most wonderful hope. So help us as believers that we will all desire to live such a life to the glory of Thee.
We give Thee thanks and we pray in Jesus' name.
Amen.

Can you fathom that God himself is working in your life to make you into the person he wants you to be into the person that pleases him. So as we pray for sanctification, we ask ourselves who is going to sanctify us. How are we going to be sanctified? The God of peace is the one who will sanctify us. God alone produces fruit. He may bless some in the church with spiritual gifts to teach others about disciplehip and sanctification, but they are at best his instruments. Only he alone produces sanctification. How does God sanctified us? Primarily God sanctifies us through the wonderworking of his holy spirit. And the instrument in which the Holy Spirit uses to sanctify us is through the Bible, the word of God. Ephesians 5:26 said, "That he might sanctify and cleanse the church with the washing of water by the word. That is why you and I must never neglect the word of God and then expect to grow. We cannot neglect the reading of the Bible, the study, meditation and memorizing of the word, hearing the word and then expect ourselves to grow in sanctification. That will never happen. God is the author of the Bible. He's the one who teaches the word of God. He's the one who uses the word of God and empowers us to walk in his truth in sanctification in holiness. Next, God involves people to help in the sanctification. Do you realize that God has gifted certain people in the church with spiritual gifts to help others in their sanctification in their spiritual growth? God wants us to grow in the context of the church family. We are a spiritual family. That is why we have pastors, teachers, elders, and deacons. Take a moment and think of our natural family. We have our fathers, our mothers and children. The father is the one who leads. The mother is the one who submits and assist as the helper and the children obey the parents. As the children grow and have their own families, they in turn will lead and teach their own families. And this cycle [snorts] is repeated as long as our Lord Jesus would tar in his return. In a similar fashion, that is how God deals with the church family. God has blessed us with evangelists, pastors and teachers. They have lived and they have died. And God raised up other evangelists, pastors and teachers. They continued to live and died. And then God will raise others. For what purpose? Well, Ephesians 4:12 said, "For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, and for how long do we all come in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Some people will gauge spiritual maturity by ascertaining how much the believer knows the Bible or how prayerful he is or how he's serving the Lord, how much time he spends in the fellowship group meetings as etc. While all these spiritual activities are good, the best answer is we measure our lives against the life of Jesus Christ, the perfect God man. We can never be like Christ as I mentioned before but we can grow to become more and more like him and that is what you and I should live our lives. Sanctification is a thorough work. Look at the phrase and the very God of peace sanctify you holy. The word holy means entirely or completely. And I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Allow me to say this. This is a verse that the dichotomy and tricotomy controversy would surface and often quoted and debated. Basically those who believe in tricotomy would argue that man is made up of three parts body, soul and spirit. That is why 2 Corinthians 5:8 said, "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord." Take note what is absent from the body and what is present with the Lord the soul or the spirit. If we are going to embrace tricotomy which means man is made up of three parts simply based on 1 Thessalonians 5:23 then what are we going to do when we come to verses like thou shalt love the Lord with all thy soul with all thy heart with all thy mind and with all thy strength doesn't mean that man has four parts. Most certainly not. So what Paul meant here is completely thoroughly entirely every facet of our inner man and our physical man be set apart unto God. In other words, you be set apart unto God. Be sanctified. So may God change your thinking. May God change your attitude. May God change your motives and choices so that in every way your life will not reflect the way of the world but will reflect the way of Jesus Christ. May the Lord [clears throat] sanctify you completely holy. Next sanctification is a persevering work. Your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless. To preserve is to guard and keep. We have been commanded to guard our hearts because out of it comes the issues of life. We are commanded to guard our tongues because it is like a fire. It will destroy us. We have been commanded to guard our thoughts because out of it will be manifested into our actions and behaviors. God is the only one who is able to preserve God and keep us. If God were to withdraw his preserving grace from us even for the brief moment, we are finished. The God who has saved us will continue to save us and preserve us. The way we are preserved and kept in the Christian life is through sanctification. Since the day of your conversion, when you embrace Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, God has already begun this sanctifying work in you. And [clears throat] where there is sanification, there must be this transformed life. There must be this radical change in your life. A story was told of a young girl who accepted Christ as her savior and she applied for membership in the local church. The pastor asked her, "Were you a sinner before you received the Lord Jesus into your life?" [snorts] "Yes," she replied. Well, are you still a sinner? The pastor asked. The girl replied. To tell you the truth, I feel I am a greater sinner than before. Then what real change have you experienced? I don't quite know how to explain it. He said or she said, "Except I used to be a sinner running after sin, but now that I'm saved, I'm a sinner running away from sin." How true? There must be this radical change in our lives if God is doing his sanctifying work in us. Listen to the words of First Thessalonians 4:3-4. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication, that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor. It is our responsibility to abstain from sin and fornication.
Add correct line breaks, correct capitalisation, correct punctuation, correct Australian English spelling, and correct KJV Bible verse quotations and references to my paragraphs where applicable. But do NOT — I repeat — do NOT alter or change ANY words from my paragraphs under ALL circumstances.
It is our responsibility to know how to control our vessel or our body to exercise self-control to say no when it comes to sin. If we allow this body to commit adultery, if we allow this tongue to gossip and slander, if we allow this mind to be filled with immoral thoughts and wicked things, if we allow these hands to steal, then we are not living a sanctified life. but a sinful life. We should always maintain a good and upright reputation never to give the enemies of the gospel reasons to attack our Christian faith. What about you, my friend? Have you lived such a life? Have you been endeavoring to live such a life? Finally, our sanification is certain. Look at the last phrase. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. As believers, we have been called. We have been justified. Our sins have been forgiven and washed by the precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are being sanctified on the daily basis. And one day we will be sanctified perfectly completely. God will not send someone else to complete it. He will not send an angel to complete it. He himself will complete it personally in and through our lives by his spirit. Philippians 1:6 said, "Being confident of this very thing, that he which have begun a good work in you, saving you, will perform it, which means will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ." This is God's pledge to every believer. Every one of us. [snorts] The God who has sanctified us at our conversions will continue to sanctify us every day of our lives and ultimately he will perfectly sanctify us at our glorification. We all have heard some of these lifechanging testimonies, but sad to say, many professed believers just stop there. What we mean? What do we mean by that? [clears throat] They do not go on to live a sanctified life. They do not deal with the other sins in their lives which may not be that obvious. Sins like pride, bitterness, anger, envy, jealousy, etc. All they focused on were the obvious sins like drug taking, alcohol, drinking, living an adulterous life. But what about the other sins? Holy means completely every aspects of our lives, not just one. So if you and I truly understand the meaning of sanctification in our lives, then we ought to know that it is a supernatural work. God is personally involved in our spiritual development. As a Christian, we also have a responsibility to respond to it. Then the question is how then can we not change? God forbids. Are you a believer? How can you be assured of your salvation? How can you be assured of the salvation of your children just simply by the profession of their faith? We are assured of our salvation when we see God's spirit and God's work working in our lives sanctifying us on a daily basis. And the Bible tells us, "It is not by might nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord." So it is the wonderworking of God's spirit and his work in our lives sanctifying us. So this is what you and I must pray for our church that be better church will be sanctified. The pastor cannot do it. The elders and deacons cannot do it. Nor can the members do it. Only God alone creates sanification and we simply responds to his supernatural work in obedience and then we will be able to see his sanctifying work in our lives. Once we see that happening in our lives and we are growing from day to day from strength to strength from faith to faith then we are assured in our hearts that we are truly the children of God. What a blessing. That better be BB church be sanctified. And thou who has begun this good work in us by saving us at our conversions will continue to do thy good work in us in sanctifying us and thou has pledged this promise that thou will perform it complete it bring it to the ultimate sanctific ification which is our glorification at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. And this is something that we cling on to a blessed hope, a most wonderful hope. So help us as believers that we will all desire to live such a life to the glory of thee. We give thee thanks and we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
I prayfully decided to uh pause in our study on the book of Colossians
59:20
59 minutes, 20 seconds
uh because since we would be having our 40th anniversary, I would like to preach uh some messages pertaining to the church.
59:33
59 minutes, 33 seconds
So today we want to consider the last part of the first epistle to the Thessalonians.
59:43
59 minutes, 43 seconds
When we write secular letters, we often end with greetings like
59:50
59 minutes, 50 seconds
please send my warmed regards to your family or I wish you all the best.
1:00:00
1 hour
In a divinely inspired letter like this,
1:00:07
1 hour, 7 seconds
it was typical for the Apostle Paul to end this letter with a prayer.
1:00:16
1 hour, 16 seconds
That was why Paul prayed in 1 Thessalonians 5:23- 24, which would be our text for today's message.
1:00:26
1 hour, 26 seconds
1 Thessalonians 5:23.
1:00:30
1 hour, 30 seconds
And the very God of peace sanctify you holy. And I pray God your whole spirit
1:00:38
1 hour, 38 seconds
and soul and body. Be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:00:48
1 hour, 48 seconds
Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
1:00:54
1 hour, 54 seconds
The Lord blessed the reading of his holy and sacred word.
1:01:00
1 hour, 1 minute
The way Paul prayed for the Thessalonians should also be the same way we ought to pray for our church.
1:01:12
1 hour, 1 minute, 12 seconds
That is why I've titled the message as praying for our church part two.
1:01:24
1 hour, 1 minute, 24 seconds
Do you realize that the things we used to think of most of the time,
1:01:32
1 hour, 1 minute, 32 seconds
the things that are always on our minds, [screaming] they are the things that are of greatest concern to us.
1:01:44
1 hour, 1 minute, 44 seconds
The things that we often pray for
1:01:51
1 hour, 1 minute, 51 seconds
are the things that are of great importance to us.
1:01:57
1 hour, 1 minute, 57 seconds
things like our physical good health and strength,
1:02:04
1 hour, 2 minutes, 4 seconds
our jobs and financial securityities, our families, our children's education
1:02:14
1 hour, 2 minutes, 14 seconds
or our marital relationships etc.
1:02:21
1 hour, 2 minutes, 21 seconds
But what about sanctification? What about holiness?
1:02:30
1 hour, 2 minutes, 30 seconds
Do we ever pray that our children be godly
1:02:36
1 hour, 2 minutes, 36 seconds
or the people in the church be holy or we ourselves be more and more like Christ?
1:02:46
1 hour, 2 minutes, 46 seconds
Sadly, very seldom we pray for sanctification.
1:02:54
1 hour, 2 minutes, 54 seconds
The word sanctification is a wonderful word.
1:02:59
1 hour, 2 minutes, 59 seconds
It is a theological and biblical word.
1:03:04
1 hour, 3 minutes, 4 seconds
Sadly, many churches try to shy away from
1:03:11
1 hour, 3 minutes, 11 seconds
some of these theological words because
1:03:19
1 hour, 3 minutes, 19 seconds
they would simplify these words. So that the people could understand
1:03:30
1 hour, 3 minutes, 30 seconds
words like sovereignty, providence, justification,
1:03:37
1 hour, 3 minutes, 37 seconds
sanctification, glorification, and so forth.
1:03:44
1 hour, 3 minutes, 44 seconds
We must realize that you and I cannot improve on the words in the holy scriptures.
1:03:57
1 hour, 3 minutes, 57 seconds
But instead of avoiding such words, we need to study them
1:04:05
1 hour, 4 minutes, 5 seconds
so that we can better understand the word of God.
1:04:11
1 hour, 4 minutes, 11 seconds
Today we want to learn something about sanctification which is also the theme for our home care group messages.
1:04:23
1 hour, 4 minutes, 23 seconds
To sanctify means to be made holy, be consecrated,
1:04:33
1 hour, 4 minutes, 33 seconds
be separated from what is sinful to be devoted to the Lord and to be set apart unto him.
1:04:45
1 hour, 4 minutes, 45 seconds
So it involves the idea of separation.
1:04:50
1 hour, 4 minutes, 50 seconds
It involves dedication and it involves purity.
1:04:59
1 hour, 4 minutes, 59 seconds
Sanctification is connected to our salvation.
1:05:06
1 hour, 5 minutes, 6 seconds
If you are a believer, an elect of God, who has chosen you even before the
1:05:13
1 hour, 5 minutes, 13 seconds
foundation of the world, then he will perform his sanctifying work in your life.
1:05:26
1 hour, 5 minutes, 26 seconds
Allow me to explain this.
1:05:29
1 hour, 5 minutes, 29 seconds
At the point of our conversions, when we first embraced Jesus Christ as
1:05:36
1 hour, 5 minutes, 36 seconds
our Lord and Savior, we have been justified in our sins.
1:05:42
1 hour, 5 minutes, 42 seconds
God sanctified us by setting us apart from sin onto himself.
1:05:53
1 hour, 5 minutes, 53 seconds
He separated us from darkness and unto his marvelous light.
1:06:01
1 hour, 6 minutes, 1 second
He set us apart from unbelief onto faith.
1:06:08
1 hour, 6 minutes, 8 seconds
That is our positional sanification whereby God declared us to be righteous
1:06:18
1 hour, 6 minutes, 18 seconds
by virtue of what our Lord Jesus has done for us on the cross at Calvary.
1:06:29
1 hour, 6 minutes, 29 seconds
One day we would be perfectly free from sin.
1:06:35
1 hour, 6 minutes, 35 seconds
We would be in perfect fellowship with God. And that day awaits us in the future.
1:06:45
1 hour, 6 minutes, 45 seconds
The day of glorification, the day of resurrection, the day when we see our savior face to
1:06:54
1 hour, 6 minutes, 54 seconds
face, we will be perfectly sanctified.
1:07:02
1 hour, 7 minutes, 2 seconds
That is our ultimate glorification.
1:07:10
1 hour, 7 minutes, 10 seconds
So what is in between?
1:07:15
1 hour, 7 minutes, 15 seconds
What is in between our justification and our glorification?
1:07:23
1 hour, 7 minutes, 23 seconds
Sanctification.
1:07:28
1 hour, 7 minutes, 28 seconds
As long as we live our lives on this earth in this mortal body, we do not change overnight.
1:07:37
1 hour, 7 minutes, 37 seconds
We are constantly being sanctified. If we are true believers,
1:07:45
1 hour, 7 minutes, 45 seconds
we are transformed and changed progressively and that is our progressive sanctification.
1:07:57
1 hour, 7 minutes, 57 seconds
So positionally we are sanctified.
1:08:00
1 hour, 8 minutes
Ultimately we would be sanctified but in the meantime we are being sanctified
1:08:10
1 hour, 8 minutes, 10 seconds
progressively every day of our lives.
1:08:15
1 hour, 8 minutes, 15 seconds
So here Paul was praying about a present work that needed to be done at this
1:08:23
1 hour, 8 minutes, 23 seconds
present moment while the Thessalonians were living their lives in this world.
1:08:33
1 hour, 8 minutes, 33 seconds
When the word sanctify is being used in the present tense, it always refers to a
1:08:41
1 hour, 8 minutes, 41 seconds
progressive work, something that is still ongoing.
1:08:47
1 hour, 8 minutes, 47 seconds
It is not yet finished and complete.
1:08:53
1 hour, 8 minutes, 53 seconds
So if you are a believer, you have been justified, saved,
1:09:00
1 hour, 9 minutes
and declared righteous because of the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross.
1:09:10
1 hour, 9 minutes, 10 seconds
But there's still work to be done in your life.
1:09:17
1 hour, 9 minutes, 17 seconds
There is no such thing as someone who has been justified [clears throat] and not being sanctified.
1:09:27
1 hour, 9 minutes, 27 seconds
Everyone who is a believer is being sanctified.
1:09:34
1 hour, 9 minutes, 34 seconds
Therefore, Paul was praying for the believers at Thessalonica, not for the their positional
1:09:44
1 hour, 9 minutes, 44 seconds
sanctification because they were already believers.
1:09:49
1 hour, 9 minutes, 49 seconds
He was praying for their progressive sanctification all the way until their ultimate sanctification.
1:10:00
1 hour, 10 minutes
How do we know?
1:10:02
1 hour, 10 minutes, 2 seconds
because of the phrase onto the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ
1:10:12
1 hour, 10 minutes, 12 seconds
that is about the rapture and that is in the future.
1:10:19
1 hour, 10 minutes, 19 seconds
So Paul was praying for their progressive sanctification and he said
1:10:26
1 hour, 10 minutes, 26 seconds
and the very God of peace sanctify you holy.
1:10:35
1 hour, 10 minutes, 35 seconds
Paul could have used the phrase the God of love or the God of grace or the God of mercy.
1:10:46
1 hour, 10 minutes, 46 seconds
But interestingly, he used the phrase the God of peace.
1:10:54
1 hour, 10 minutes, 54 seconds
Why did he do that? Peace has to do with our salvation.
1:11:04
1 hour, 11 minutes, 4 seconds
You see, without peace, we would be enemies of God.
1:11:10
1 hour, 11 minutes, 10 seconds
Because of our sins, we are not naturally at peace with God.
1:11:19
1 hour, 11 minutes, 19 seconds
We are at war with God.
1:11:22
1 hour, 11 minutes, 22 seconds
We are at war with each other and we are always at war with ourselves.
1:11:29
1 hour, 11 minutes, 29 seconds
That is why we experience much misery
1:11:36
1 hour, 11 minutes, 36 seconds
and there's so much unrest and chaos in this world.
1:11:44
1 hour, 11 minutes, 44 seconds
It is Christ who has broken down the emity between God and men
1:11:52
1 hour, 11 minutes, 52 seconds
through his death and the shedding of his precious blood.
1:12:00
1 hour, 12 minutes
So God is the source of true peace and that is why he is called the God of peace.
1:12:12
1 hour, 12 minutes, 12 seconds
Dear friend, if you are an unbeliever, you are not at peace with God.
1:12:21
1 hour, 12 minutes, 21 seconds
You may think that you have peace, but you are not at peace with God. In fact, you are an enemy of God.
1:12:34
1 hour, 12 minutes, 34 seconds
But he can give you this peace if you will come to him
1:12:42
1 hour, 12 minutes, 42 seconds
through Jesus Christ for salvation.
1:12:48
1 hour, 12 minutes, 48 seconds
Apart from Christ there is no peace.
1:12:55
1 hour, 12 minutes, 55 seconds
One day you will die and you will die as an enemy of God.
1:13:05
1 hour, 13 minutes, 5 seconds
You will stand before him in the horror of your sins on judgment day and be sent to eternal damnation.
1:13:19
1 hour, 13 minutes, 19 seconds
As believers, we not only have the God of peace,
1:13:26
1 hour, 13 minutes, 26 seconds
but we also experience the peace of God.
1:13:33
1 hour, 13 minutes, 33 seconds
Though life is filled with trials and troubles, at times we may be overwhelmed by worries and anxieties.
1:13:44
1 hour, 13 minutes, 44 seconds
We need to trust completely in what God has done for our salvation
1:13:50
1 hour, 13 minutes, 50 seconds
and we need to continuously trust in him.
1:13:56
1 hour, 13 minutes, 56 seconds
If we do that, Philippians 4:7 said,
1:14:02
1 hour, 14 minutes, 2 seconds
"And the peace of God which passes all understanding
1:14:09
1 hour, 14 minutes, 9 seconds
shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
1:14:16
1 hour, 14 minutes, 16 seconds
There may be troubles and afflictions and troubles of all sorts,
1:14:24
1 hour, 14 minutes, 24 seconds
but you will have the peace of God guarding and keeping your hearts and
1:14:32
1 hour, 14 minutes, 32 seconds
your minds through our Lord Jesus Christ. What a blessed promise.
1:14:41
1 hour, 14 minutes, 41 seconds
Let us learn some valuable lessons about sanctification from this passage
1:14:50
1 hour, 14 minutes, 50 seconds
because this is how we ought to pray for our church
1:14:56
1 hour, 14 minutes, 56 seconds
and the very God of peace sanctify you holy.
1:15:04
1 hour, 15 minutes, 4 seconds
Firstly, sanctification is an expression of our love.
1:15:12
1 hour, 15 minutes, 12 seconds
The apostle Paul loved the people and he had already expressed his love
1:15:19
1 hour, 15 minutes, 19 seconds
for the Thessalonians throughout his letters.
1:15:27
1 hour, 15 minutes, 27 seconds
What does a pastor want for his people?
1:15:33
1 hour, 15 minutes, 33 seconds
What does a parent want for his or her child?
1:15:41
1 hour, 15 minutes, 41 seconds
What does a Sunday school teacher want for the little ones?
1:15:49
1 hour, 15 minutes, 49 seconds
If we truly have this love for our brothers and sisters in Christ, then this must be our main concern.
1:16:03
1 hour, 16 minutes, 3 seconds
that they may be sanctified.
1:16:11
1 hour, 16 minutes, 11 seconds
Do you realize that sometimes we can be so concerned about
1:16:18
1 hour, 16 minutes, 18 seconds
the number of spiritual activities we have been attending?
1:16:24
1 hour, 16 minutes, 24 seconds
We can be so bogged down by the routines of attending those
1:16:34
1 hour, 16 minutes, 34 seconds
fellowship meetings and ministries.
1:16:40
1 hour, 16 minutes, 40 seconds
So much so that we do not even know why we are doing what we are doing.
1:16:47
1 hour, 16 minutes, 47 seconds
We are just going through the motion.
1:16:52
1 hour, 16 minutes, 52 seconds
We forget our main concern and our main goal.
1:17:00
1 hour, 17 minutes
If you are a parent, what is the goal and aim of your parenting?
1:17:09
1 hour, 17 minutes, 9 seconds
As parents, often times we will get so frustrated with the behavior of our children
1:17:17
1 hour, 17 minutes, 17 seconds
that we will discipline them and even lose our temple and shout at them.
1:17:30
1 hour, 17 minutes, 30 seconds
But behind the screaming, what do we really want?
1:17:38
1 hour, 17 minutes, 38 seconds
Is it just about our children behaving themselves and doing what we think is right?
1:17:51
1 hour, 17 minutes, 51 seconds
If you are a Sunday school teacher, what is the goal and aim of you preparing the Sunday school lessons?
1:18:02
1 hour, 18 minutes, 2 seconds
It is just because of filling in the slot
1:18:10
1 hour, 18 minutes, 10 seconds
because it happens that you are the one assigned to do the Sunday school for that week.
1:18:22
1 hour, 18 minutes, 22 seconds
Is that all that is to it?
1:18:27
1 hour, 18 minutes, 27 seconds
If you are a preacher, what is your goal and aim?
1:18:33
1 hour, 18 minutes, 33 seconds
Is it just to fill the pull pit and then finish the one hour of preaching?
1:18:44
1 hour, 18 minutes, 44 seconds
Our goal and aim is always about this
1:18:50
1 hour, 18 minutes, 50 seconds
that souls will be saved and the people will be sanctified.
1:19:00
1 hour, 19 minutes
The people whom God has placed under our cares are growing in sanctification,
1:19:08
1 hour, 19 minutes, 8 seconds
in holiness and becoming more and more like Christ.
1:19:17
1 hour, 19 minutes, 17 seconds
If this is your main aim and goal, then you should pray, right?
1:19:30
1 hour, 19 minutes, 30 seconds
Sanctification is a supernatural work.
1:19:35
1 hour, 19 minutes, 35 seconds
Notice the phrase says, "And the very God of peace sanctify you
1:19:41
1 hour, 19 minutes, 41 seconds
holy," which means God himself is the one who can and will sanctify you.
1:19:50
1 hour, 19 minutes, 50 seconds
I want you to consider this statement very seriously.
1:19:56
1 hour, 19 minutes, 56 seconds
God is personally involved in the development
1:20:04
1 hour, 20 minutes, 4 seconds
of you as a spiritual person.
1:20:11
1 hour, 20 minutes, 11 seconds
He is personally involved in your sanctification in you being holy.
1:20:21
1 hour, 20 minutes, 21 seconds
Can you fathom that God himself is working in your life to
1:20:29
1 hour, 20 minutes, 29 seconds
make you into the person he wants you to be into the person that pleases him.
1:20:39
1 hour, 20 minutes, 39 seconds
God is the one who produces sanctification.
1:20:47
1 hour, 20 minutes, 47 seconds
You can have the most theologically trained pastor
1:20:55
1 hour, 20 minutes, 55 seconds
or you can have the most knowledgeable parent
1:21:02
1 hour, 21 minutes, 2 seconds
or you can have the most qualified Sunday school teacher.
1:21:08
1 hour, 21 minutes, 8 seconds
But if God is not sanctifying the person you are ministering to, that person would not be sanctified.
1:21:21
1 hour, 21 minutes, 21 seconds
We can spend all our time and efforts creating the best programs in the church,
1:21:30
1 hour, 21 minutes, 30 seconds
but you and I can never create spiritual growth.
1:21:38
1 hour, 21 minutes, 38 seconds
Only God alone creates the growth.
1:21:45
1 hour, 21 minutes, 45 seconds
This will teach us whom we ought to depend on.
1:21:53
1 hour, 21 minutes, 53 seconds
So as we pray for sanctification, we ask ourselves who is going to sanctify us.
1:22:01
1 hour, 22 minutes, 1 second
How are we going to be sanctified?
1:22:05
1 hour, 22 minutes, 5 seconds
The God of peace is the one who will sanctify us.
1:22:11
1 hour, 22 minutes, 11 seconds
God alone produces fruit.
1:22:17
1 hour, 22 minutes, 17 seconds
He may bless some in the church with spiritual gifts to teach others about
1:22:24
1 hour, 22 minutes, 24 seconds
disciplehip and sanctification, but they are at best his instruments.
1:22:32
1 hour, 22 minutes, 32 seconds
Only he alone produces sanctification.
1:22:40
1 hour, 22 minutes, 40 seconds
How does God sanctified us?
1:22:43
1 hour, 22 minutes, 43 seconds
Primarily God sanctifies us through the wonderworking of his holy spirit.
1:22:52
1 hour, 22 minutes, 52 seconds
And the instrument in which the Holy Spirit uses to sanctify us is through
1:23:01
1 hour, 23 minutes, 1 second
the Bible, the word of God.
1:23:07
1 hour, 23 minutes, 7 seconds
Ephesians 5:26 said, "That he might sanctify and cleanse the church
1:23:15
1 hour, 23 minutes, 15 seconds
with the washing of water by the word.
1:23:23
1 hour, 23 minutes, 23 seconds
That is why you and I must never neglect the word of God and then expect to grow.
1:23:36
1 hour, 23 minutes, 36 seconds
We cannot neglect the reading of the Bible, the study,
1:23:43
1 hour, 23 minutes, 43 seconds
meditation and memorizing of the word,
1:23:50
1 hour, 23 minutes, 50 seconds
hearing the word and then expect ourselves to grow in sanctification.
1:23:58
1 hour, 23 minutes, 58 seconds
That will never happen. God is the author of the Bible.
1:24:05
1 hour, 24 minutes, 5 seconds
He's the one who teaches the word of God. He's the one who uses the word of
1:24:10
1 hour, 24 minutes, 10 seconds
God and empowers us to walk in his truth in sanctification in holiness.
1:24:24
1 hour, 24 minutes, 24 seconds
Next, God involves people to help in the sanctification.
1:24:33
1 hour, 24 minutes, 33 seconds
Do you realize that God has gifted certain people in the church with spiritual gifts to help others in
1:24:42
1 hour, 24 minutes, 42 seconds
their sanctification in their spiritual growth?
1:24:51
1 hour, 24 minutes, 51 seconds
God wants us to grow in the context of the church family.
1:24:59
1 hour, 24 minutes, 59 seconds
We are a spiritual family.
1:25:05
1 hour, 25 minutes, 5 seconds
That is why we have pastors, teachers, elders, and deacons.
1:25:14
1 hour, 25 minutes, 14 seconds
Take a moment and think of our natural family.
1:25:19
1 hour, 25 minutes, 19 seconds
We have our fathers, our mothers and children.
1:25:26
1 hour, 25 minutes, 26 seconds
The father is the one who leads.
1:25:30
1 hour, 25 minutes, 30 seconds
The mother is the one who submits and assist
1:25:38
1 hour, 25 minutes, 38 seconds
as the helper and the children obey the parents.
1:25:47
1 hour, 25 minutes, 47 seconds
As the children grow and have their own families,
1:25:54
1 hour, 25 minutes, 54 seconds
they in turn will lead and teach their own families.
1:26:03
1 hour, 26 minutes, 3 seconds
And this cycle [snorts] is repeated as long as our Lord Jesus would tar in his return.
1:26:15
1 hour, 26 minutes, 15 seconds
In a similar fashion, that is how God deals with the church family.
1:26:23
1 hour, 26 minutes, 23 seconds
God has blessed us with evangelists, pastors and teachers.
1:26:34
1 hour, 26 minutes, 34 seconds
They have lived and they have died. And God raised up other evangelists, pastors and teachers.
1:26:45
1 hour, 26 minutes, 45 seconds
They continued to live and died. And then God will raise others. For what purpose?
1:26:56
1 hour, 26 minutes, 56 seconds
Well, Ephesians 4:12 said, "For the perfecting of the saints,
1:27:04
1 hour, 27 minutes, 4 seconds
for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
1:27:11
1 hour, 27 minutes, 11 seconds
and for how long do we all come in the unity of the faith
1:27:18
1 hour, 27 minutes, 18 seconds
and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man,
1:27:25
1 hour, 27 minutes, 25 seconds
unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
1:27:32
1 hour, 27 minutes, 32 seconds
Perfect does not mean sinless. It means a complete spiritually mature person.
1:27:44
1 hour, 27 minutes, 44 seconds
And none of us can ever reach the level of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:27:54
1 hour, 27 minutes, 54 seconds
We can only reach certain measures of his stature.
1:28:01
1 hour, 28 minutes, 1 second
We will grow to be more and more like him.
1:28:05
1 hour, 28 minutes, 5 seconds
But we can never be him.
1:28:11
1 hour, 28 minutes, 11 seconds
The pastors and teachers are to teach and disciple the people so that they may grow in the knowledge of Christ.
1:28:22
1 hour, 28 minutes, 22 seconds
be sanctified and mature spiritually.
1:28:30
1 hour, 28 minutes, 30 seconds
When we look around ourselves, we can see people within the church of
1:28:37
1 hour, 28 minutes, 37 seconds
different levels of spiritual maturity.
1:28:44
1 hour, 28 minutes, 44 seconds
Some people are so good at considering others. This person is not spiritual.
1:28:55
1 hour, 28 minutes, 55 seconds
That person is spiritual.
1:28:58
1 hour, 28 minutes, 58 seconds
This person does not behave like a Christian.
1:29:05
1 hour, 29 minutes, 5 seconds
That person surely is a Christian.
1:29:08
1 hour, 29 minutes, 8 seconds
People are very good at looking at others. But what about themselves?
1:29:17
1 hour, 29 minutes, 17 seconds
Have we ever asked ourselves how am I growing as a Christian?
1:29:26
1 hour, 29 minutes, 26 seconds
Am I living a sanctified life?
1:29:34
1 hour, 29 minutes, 34 seconds
Some people will gauge spiritual maturity by ascertaining how much the believer
1:29:42
1 hour, 29 minutes, 42 seconds
knows the Bible or how prayerful he is or how
1:29:52
1 hour, 29 minutes, 52 seconds
he's serving the Lord, how much time he spends in the fellowship group meetings as etc.
1:30:03
1 hour, 30 minutes, 3 seconds
While all these spiritual activities are good, the best answer is
1:30:11
1 hour, 30 minutes, 11 seconds
we measure our lives against the life of Jesus Christ,
1:30:19
1 hour, 30 minutes, 19 seconds
the perfect God man.
1:30:25
1 hour, 30 minutes, 25 seconds
We can never be like Christ as I mentioned before but we can grow to become more and more
1:30:34
1 hour, 30 minutes, 34 seconds
like him and that is what you and I should live our lives.
1:30:44
1 hour, 30 minutes, 44 seconds
Sanctification is a thorough work.
1:30:50
1 hour, 30 minutes, 50 seconds
Look at the phrase and the very God of peace sanctify you holy. The word holy means entirely or completely.
1:31:01
1 hour, 31 minutes, 1 second
And I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless
1:31:10
1 hour, 31 minutes, 10 seconds
unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:31:17
1 hour, 31 minutes, 17 seconds
Allow me to say this.
1:31:20
1 hour, 31 minutes, 20 seconds
This is a verse that the dichotomy and tricotomy
1:31:28
1 hour, 31 minutes, 28 seconds
controversy would surface and often quoted and debated.
1:31:43
1 hour, 31 minutes, 43 seconds
Basically those who believe in tricotomy would argue that man is made up of three
1:31:51
1 hour, 31 minutes, 51 seconds
parts body, soul and spirit.
1:32:02
1 hour, 32 minutes, 2 seconds
Those who believe in dichotomy say that man is made up of only two parts.
1:32:13
1 hour, 32 minutes, 13 seconds
Body, soul and spirit are one.
1:32:18
1 hour, 32 minutes, 18 seconds
Soul and spirit are used interchangeably.
1:32:26
1 hour, 32 minutes, 26 seconds
We believe in dichotomy. Man is made up of only two parts.
1:32:34
1 hour, 32 minutes, 34 seconds
Body, soul or spirit.
1:32:43
1 hour, 32 minutes, 43 seconds
One is material, the body, the other is
1:32:51
1 hour, 32 minutes, 51 seconds
non-material, the soul or spirit.
1:32:57
1 hour, 32 minutes, 57 seconds
That is why 2 Corinthians 5:8 said, "We are confident, I say, and
1:33:05
1 hour, 33 minutes, 5 seconds
willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord."
1:33:14
1 hour, 33 minutes, 14 seconds
Take note what is absent from the body and what is present
1:33:23
1 hour, 33 minutes, 23 seconds
with the Lord the soul or the spirit.
1:33:33
1 hour, 33 minutes, 33 seconds
If we are going to embrace tricotomy which means man is made up of three parts
1:33:41
1 hour, 33 minutes, 41 seconds
simply based on 1 Thessalonians 5:23
1:33:48
1 hour, 33 minutes, 48 seconds
then what are we going to do when we come to verses like thou shalt love the Lord with all thy soul with all thy
1:33:56
1 hour, 33 minutes, 56 seconds
heart with all thy mind and with all thy strength doesn't mean that man has four parts.
1:34:06
1 hour, 34 minutes, 6 seconds
Most certainly not.
1:34:09
1 hour, 34 minutes, 9 seconds
So what Paul meant here is completely thoroughly entirely
1:34:18
1 hour, 34 minutes, 18 seconds
every facet of our inner man and
1:34:25
1 hour, 34 minutes, 25 seconds
our physical man be set apart unto God.
1:34:33
1 hour, 34 minutes, 33 seconds
In other words, you be set apart unto God. Be sanctified.
1:34:44
1 hour, 34 minutes, 44 seconds
So may God change your thinking.
1:34:46
1 hour, 34 minutes, 46 seconds
May God change your attitude. May God change your motives and choices
1:34:55
1 hour, 34 minutes, 55 seconds
so that in every way your life will not reflect the way of the world but will reflect the way of Jesus Christ.
1:35:09
1 hour, 35 minutes, 9 seconds
May the Lord [clears throat] sanctify you completely holy.
1:35:17
1 hour, 35 minutes, 17 seconds
That is what it means.
1:35:21
1 hour, 35 minutes, 21 seconds
Wherever we are lacking, that is where God would do his sanctifying work in us.
1:35:35
1 hour, 35 minutes, 35 seconds
Take a moment and think about this.
1:35:38
1 hour, 35 minutes, 38 seconds
Our thinking needs to improve, right? Our attitudes needs to improve.
1:35:50
1 hour, 35 minutes, 50 seconds
Our minds need to change.
1:35:56
1 hour, 35 minutes, 56 seconds
Can anyone say that his or her motives are always true and sincere?
1:36:05
1 hour, 36 minutes, 5 seconds
No man can.
1:36:09
1 hour, 36 minutes, 9 seconds
Which means God will continue to do his sanctifying work in our lives.
1:36:19
1 hour, 36 minutes, 19 seconds
He is not finished with us yet. He is still working in us.
1:36:29
1 hour, 36 minutes, 29 seconds
Next sanctification is a persevering work.
1:36:36
1 hour, 36 minutes, 36 seconds
Your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless.
1:36:45
1 hour, 36 minutes, 45 seconds
To preserve is to guard and keep.
1:36:51
1 hour, 36 minutes, 51 seconds
We have been commanded to guard our hearts because out of it comes the issues of life.
1:37:01
1 hour, 37 minutes, 1 second
We are commanded to guard our tongues because it is like a fire.
1:37:10
1 hour, 37 minutes, 10 seconds
It will destroy us.
1:37:14
1 hour, 37 minutes, 14 seconds
We have been commanded to guard our thoughts because out of it
1:37:22
1 hour, 37 minutes, 22 seconds
will be manifested into our actions and behaviors.
1:37:29
1 hour, 37 minutes, 29 seconds
God is the only one who is able to preserve God and keep us.
1:37:40
1 hour, 37 minutes, 40 seconds
If God were to withdraw his preserving grace from us even for the brief moment, we are finished.
1:37:50
1 hour, 37 minutes, 50 seconds
The God who has saved us will continue to save us and preserve us.
1:37:59
1 hour, 37 minutes, 59 seconds
The way we are preserved and kept in the Christian life is through sanctification.
1:38:12
1 hour, 38 minutes, 12 seconds
Since the day of your conversion, when you embrace Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior,
1:38:21
1 hour, 38 minutes, 21 seconds
God has already begun this sanctifying work in you.
1:38:28
1 hour, 38 minutes, 28 seconds
And [clears throat] where there is sanification, there must be this transformed life.
1:38:38
1 hour, 38 minutes, 38 seconds
There must be this radical change in your life.
1:38:46
1 hour, 38 minutes, 46 seconds
A story was told of a young girl who accepted Christ as her savior
1:38:53
1 hour, 38 minutes, 53 seconds
and she applied for membership in the local church.
1:38:57
1 hour, 38 minutes, 57 seconds
The pastor asked her, "Were you a sinner before you received the Lord Jesus into
1:39:06
1 hour, 39 minutes, 6 seconds
your life?" [snorts] "Yes," she replied.
1:39:12
1 hour, 39 minutes, 12 seconds
Well, are you still a sinner? The pastor asked. The girl replied.
1:39:20
1 hour, 39 minutes, 20 seconds
To tell you the truth, I feel I am a greater sinner than before.
1:39:29
1 hour, 39 minutes, 29 seconds
Then what real change have you experienced?
1:39:37
1 hour, 39 minutes, 37 seconds
I don't quite know how to explain it. He said or she said,
1:39:44
1 hour, 39 minutes, 44 seconds
"Except I used to be a sinner running after sin,
1:39:53
1 hour, 39 minutes, 53 seconds
but now that I'm saved, I'm a sinner running
1:40:01
1 hour, 40 minutes, 1 second
away from sin." How true?
1:40:09
1 hour, 40 minutes, 9 seconds
There must be this radical change in our lives if God is doing his sanctifying work in us.
1:40:21
1 hour, 40 minutes, 21 seconds
Next, our great responsibility in our own sanctification.
1:40:28
1 hour, 40 minutes, 28 seconds
Indeed, God has blessed us with all spiritual blessings.
1:40:33
1 hour, 40 minutes, 33 seconds
Everything that pertains to life and godliness, he has given to us through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:40:42
1 hour, 40 minutes, 42 seconds
We always have needs. We are always lacking.
1:40:47
1 hour, 40 minutes, 47 seconds
That is why we depend on the Lord Jesus moment by moment, day by day.
1:40:57
1 hour, 40 minutes, 57 seconds
There will never come a time whereby we do not need him.
1:41:04
1 hour, 41 minutes, 4 seconds
But that does not mean that we do not need to do anything when it comes to our sanctification.
1:41:13
1 hour, 41 minutes, 13 seconds
Just sit and do nothing and let God do his work.
1:41:21
1 hour, 41 minutes, 21 seconds
We have a great responsibility in our own sanctification,
1:41:28
1 hour, 41 minutes, 28 seconds
in our own holiness and godliness, in our commitment to live a righteous life.
1:41:38
1 hour, 41 minutes, 38 seconds
Listen to the words of First Thessalonians 4:3-4.
1:41:45
1 hour, 41 minutes, 45 seconds
For this is the will of God, even your sanctification,
1:41:52
1 hour, 41 minutes, 52 seconds
that ye should abstain from fornication, that every one of you should know how to
1:42:00
1 hour, 42 minutes
possess his vessel in sanctification and honor.
1:42:08
1 hour, 42 minutes, 8 seconds
It is our responsibility to abstain from sin and fornication.
1:42:15
1 hour, 42 minutes, 15 seconds
It is our responsibility to know how to control our vessel or our
1:42:22
1 hour, 42 minutes, 22 seconds
body to exercise self-control to say no when it comes to sin.
1:42:32
1 hour, 42 minutes, 32 seconds
If we allow this body to commit adultery, if we allow this tongue to gossip and
1:42:41
1 hour, 42 minutes, 41 seconds
slander, if we allow this mind to be filled with immoral thoughts
1:42:50
1 hour, 42 minutes, 50 seconds
and wicked things, if we allow these hands to steal,
1:42:59
1 hour, 42 minutes, 59 seconds
then we are not living a sanctified life. but a sinful life.
1:43:06
1 hour, 43 minutes, 6 seconds
We have a responsibility.
1:43:10
1 hour, 43 minutes, 10 seconds
There is God's sovereignty and human responsibility in play in our sanctification.
1:43:20
1 hour, 43 minutes, 20 seconds
Rather than yielding to temptation through the empowerment of the Holy
1:43:27
1 hour, 43 minutes, 27 seconds
Spirit and his word, we seek to live a blameless life.
1:43:35
1 hour, 43 minutes, 35 seconds
And God will preserve us blameless until when?
1:43:43
1 hour, 43 minutes, 43 seconds
until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, until the rapture of the church, until Jesus comes in the clouds for us.
1:43:55
1 hour, 43 minutes, 55 seconds
To be blameless does not mean that we are sinless, for no man is perfect.
1:44:04
1 hour, 44 minutes, 4 seconds
To be blameless means to be above reproach.
1:44:08
1 hour, 44 minutes, 8 seconds
In other words, our Christian testimony should not be in question.
1:44:18
1 hour, 44 minutes, 18 seconds
There should be nothing which people can accuse us of.
1:44:26
1 hour, 44 minutes, 26 seconds
Yes, we may have sinned, but we repent. We do not remain in sin.
1:44:37
1 hour, 44 minutes, 37 seconds
We should always maintain a good and upright reputation
1:44:43
1 hour, 44 minutes, 43 seconds
never to give the enemies of the gospel reasons to attack our Christian faith.
1:44:54
1 hour, 44 minutes, 54 seconds
What about you, my friend? Have you lived such a life?
1:45:01
1 hour, 45 minutes, 1 second
Have you been endeavoring to live such a life?
1:45:08
1 hour, 45 minutes, 8 seconds
Finally, our sanification is certain.
1:45:16
1 hour, 45 minutes, 16 seconds
Look at the last phrase. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
1:45:28
1 hour, 45 minutes, 28 seconds
As believers, we have been called.
1:45:32
1 hour, 45 minutes, 32 seconds
We have been justified. Our sins have been forgiven and washed by the precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:45:42
1 hour, 45 minutes, 42 seconds
We are being sanctified on the daily basis.
1:45:47
1 hour, 45 minutes, 47 seconds
And one day we will be sanctified
1:45:53
1 hour, 45 minutes, 53 seconds
perfectly completely.
1:45:59
1 hour, 45 minutes, 59 seconds
God will not send someone else to complete it. He will not send an angel to complete it.
1:46:09
1 hour, 46 minutes, 9 seconds
He himself will complete it personally in and through our lives by his spirit.
1:46:23
1 hour, 46 minutes, 23 seconds
Philippians 1:6 said, "Being confident of this very thing,
1:46:30
1 hour, 46 minutes, 30 seconds
that he which have begun a good work in you, saving you,
1:46:36
1 hour, 46 minutes, 36 seconds
will perform it, which means will complete it until the day of Jesus
1:46:44
1 hour, 46 minutes, 44 seconds
Christ." This is God's pledge to every believer.
1:46:51
1 hour, 46 minutes, 51 seconds
Every one of us. [snorts] The God who has sanctified us at our conversions
1:47:00
1 hour, 47 minutes
will continue to sanctify us every day of our lives and ultimately he will perfectly
1:47:08
1 hour, 47 minutes, 8 seconds
sanctify us at our glorification.
1:47:14
1 hour, 47 minutes, 14 seconds
He will perform it, complete it by himself.
1:47:25
1 hour, 47 minutes, 25 seconds
When a person claimed to be a Christian,
1:47:31
1 hour, 47 minutes, 31 seconds
there would be some changes in his life, especially when
1:47:40
1 hour, 47 minutes, 40 seconds
he came from an immoral background
1:47:47
1 hour, 47 minutes, 47 seconds
or a background of unbelievers.
1:47:55
1 hour, 47 minutes, 55 seconds
If he was a drug addict, he might stop taking drugs,
1:48:02
1 hour, 48 minutes, 2 seconds
if he was an alcoholic, he might give up alcohol.
1:48:11
1 hour, 48 minutes, 11 seconds
If he was a gambler, he might give up gambling.
1:48:17
1 hour, 48 minutes, 17 seconds
If he was an adulterer, he might turn away from his immoral lifestyle.
1:48:27
1 hour, 48 minutes, 27 seconds
We all have heard some of these lifechanging testimonies,
1:48:36
1 hour, 48 minutes, 36 seconds
but sad to say, many professed believers just stop there.
1:48:46
1 hour, 48 minutes, 46 seconds
What we mean? What do we mean by that?
1:48:49
1 hour, 48 minutes, 49 seconds
[clears throat]
1:48:50
1 hour, 48 minutes, 50 seconds
They do not go on to live a sanctified life.
1:48:58
1 hour, 48 minutes, 58 seconds
They do not deal with the other sins in their lives which may not be that obvious.
1:49:06
1 hour, 49 minutes, 6 seconds
Sins like pride, bitterness, anger, envy, jealousy, etc.
1:49:16
1 hour, 49 minutes, 16 seconds
All they focused on were the obvious sins like drug taking, alcohol, drinking, living an adulterous life.
1:49:30
1 hour, 49 minutes, 30 seconds
But what about the other sins?
1:49:34
1 hour, 49 minutes, 34 seconds
Holy means completely every aspects of our lives, not just one.
1:49:45
1 hour, 49 minutes, 45 seconds
So if you and I truly understand the meaning of sanctification
1:49:52
1 hour, 49 minutes, 52 seconds
in our lives, then we ought to know that it is a supernatural work.
1:49:59
1 hour, 49 minutes, 59 seconds
God is personally involved in our spiritual development. As a Christian,
1:50:09
1 hour, 50 minutes, 9 seconds
we also have a responsibility to respond to it.
1:50:15
1 hour, 50 minutes, 15 seconds
Then the question is how then can we not change?
1:50:25
1 hour, 50 minutes, 25 seconds
God forbids. Are you a believer?
1:50:33
1 hour, 50 minutes, 33 seconds
How can you be assured of your salvation?
1:50:37
1 hour, 50 minutes, 37 seconds
How can you be assured of the salvation of your children
1:50:45
1 hour, 50 minutes, 45 seconds
just simply by the profession of their faith?
1:50:50
1 hour, 50 minutes, 50 seconds
We are assured of our salvation when we see God's spirit
1:50:59
1 hour, 50 minutes, 59 seconds
and God's work working in our lives sanctifying us on a daily basis.
1:51:13
1 hour, 51 minutes, 13 seconds
And the Bible tells us, "It is not by might nor by power,
1:51:22
1 hour, 51 minutes, 22 seconds
but by my spirit, saith the Lord."
1:51:29
1 hour, 51 minutes, 29 seconds
So it is the wonderworking of God's spirit and his work in our lives sanctifying us.
1:51:41
1 hour, 51 minutes, 41 seconds
So this is what you and I must pray for our church that be better church will be sanctified.
1:51:53
1 hour, 51 minutes, 53 seconds
The pastor cannot do it. The elders and deacons cannot do it.
1:52:01
1 hour, 52 minutes, 1 second
Nor can the members do it.
1:52:05
1 hour, 52 minutes, 5 seconds
Only God alone creates sanification and we simply
1:52:14
1 hour, 52 minutes, 14 seconds
responds to his supernatural work in obedience
1:52:24
1 hour, 52 minutes, 24 seconds
and then we will be able to see his sanctifying work in our lives.
1:52:31
1 hour, 52 minutes, 31 seconds
Once we see that happening in our lives and we are growing from day to day from strength to
1:52:41
1 hour, 52 minutes, 41 seconds
strength from faith to faith then we are assured in our hearts that we are truly the children of God.
1:52:55
1 hour, 52 minutes, 55 seconds
What a blessing.
1:52:58
1 hour, 52 minutes, 58 seconds
Let us pray. Our Father in heaven, we give thanks for this opportunity for
1:53:06
1 hour, 53 minutes, 6 seconds
us to learn how we ought to pray for our church.
1:53:13
1 hour, 53 minutes, 13 seconds
As we have begun last week, we continue to learn how we ought to pray.
1:53:20
1 hour, 53 minutes, 20 seconds
And this morning, thou has taught us the way the Apostle Paul prayed
1:53:28
1 hour, 53 minutes, 28 seconds
for the Thessalonians in regards to their sanctification.
1:53:35
1 hour, 53 minutes, 35 seconds
This ought to be the same way we pray for our church.
1:53:41
1 hour, 53 minutes, 41 seconds
That better be BB church be sanctified.
1:53:46
1 hour, 53 minutes, 46 seconds
That the members, the regular worshippers who desire to live this sanctified life.
1:53:56
1 hour, 53 minutes, 56 seconds
And thou has taught us all the valuable lessons about what is the true meaning of sanctification.
1:54:06
1 hour, 54 minutes, 6 seconds
Help us to apply all this truth into our lives. For we have only one life to live.
1:54:15
1 hour, 54 minutes, 15 seconds
And we want to live this one life in sanctification, in holiness,
1:54:23
1 hour, 54 minutes, 23 seconds
in righteousness, and godliness, all to the glory of thee.
1:54:31
1 hour, 54 minutes, 31 seconds
And thou who has begun this good work in us by saving us at our conversions
1:54:39
1 hour, 54 minutes, 39 seconds
will continue to do thy good work in us in sanctifying us
1:54:47
1 hour, 54 minutes, 47 seconds
and thou has pledged this promise that thou will perform it complete it
1:54:55
1 hour, 54 minutes, 55 seconds
bring it to the ultimate sanctific ification which is our glorification at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:55:08
1 hour, 55 minutes, 8 seconds
And this is something that we cling on to a blessed hope, a most wonderful hope.
1:55:20
1 hour, 55 minutes, 20 seconds
So help us as believers that we will all desire to live such a life to the glory of thee.
1:55:31
1 hour, 55 minutes, 31 seconds
We give thee thanks and we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
I prayfully decided to uh pause in our study on the book of Colossians
59:20
59 minutes, 20 seconds
uh because since we would be having our 40th anniversary, I would like to preach uh some messages pertaining to the church.
59:33
59 minutes, 33 seconds
So today we want to consider the last part of the first epistle to the Thessalonians.
59:43
59 minutes, 43 seconds
When we write secular letters, we often end with greetings like
59:50
59 minutes, 50 seconds
please send my warmed regards to your family or I wish you all the best.
1:00:00
1 hour
In a divinely inspired letter like this,
1:00:07
1 hour, 7 seconds
it was typical for the Apostle Paul to end this letter with a prayer.
1:00:16
1 hour, 16 seconds
That was why Paul prayed in 1 Thessalonians 5:23- 24, which would be our text for today's message.
1:00:26
1 hour, 26 seconds
1 Thessalonians 5:23.
1:00:30
1 hour, 30 seconds
And the very God of peace sanctify you holy. And I pray God your whole spirit
1:00:38
1 hour, 38 seconds
and soul and body. Be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:00:48
1 hour, 48 seconds
Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
1:00:54
1 hour, 54 seconds
The Lord blessed the reading of his holy and sacred word.
1:01:00
1 hour, 1 minute
The way Paul prayed for the Thessalonians should also be the same way we ought to pray for our church.
1:01:12
1 hour, 1 minute, 12 seconds
That is why I've titled the message as praying for our church part two.
1:01:24
1 hour, 1 minute, 24 seconds
Do you realize that the things we used to think of most of the time,
1:01:32
1 hour, 1 minute, 32 seconds
the things that are always on our minds, [screaming] they are the things that are of greatest concern to us.
1:01:44
1 hour, 1 minute, 44 seconds
The things that we often pray for
1:01:51
1 hour, 1 minute, 51 seconds
are the things that are of great importance to us.
1:01:57
1 hour, 1 minute, 57 seconds
things like our physical good health and strength,
1:02:04
1 hour, 2 minutes, 4 seconds
our jobs and financial securityities, our families, our children's education
1:02:14
1 hour, 2 minutes, 14 seconds
or our marital relationships etc.
1:02:21
1 hour, 2 minutes, 21 seconds
But what about sanctification? What about holiness?
1:02:30
1 hour, 2 minutes, 30 seconds
Do we ever pray that our children be godly
1:02:36
1 hour, 2 minutes, 36 seconds
or the people in the church be holy or we ourselves be more and more like Christ?
1:02:46
1 hour, 2 minutes, 46 seconds
Sadly, very seldom we pray for sanctification.
1:02:54
1 hour, 2 minutes, 54 seconds
The word sanctification is a wonderful word.
1:02:59
1 hour, 2 minutes, 59 seconds
It is a theological and biblical word.
1:03:04
1 hour, 3 minutes, 4 seconds
Sadly, many churches try to shy away from
1:03:11
1 hour, 3 minutes, 11 seconds
some of these theological words because
1:03:19
1 hour, 3 minutes, 19 seconds
they would simplify these words. So that the people could understand
1:03:30
1 hour, 3 minutes, 30 seconds
words like sovereignty, providence, justification,
1:03:37
1 hour, 3 minutes, 37 seconds
sanctification, glorification, and so forth.
1:03:44
1 hour, 3 minutes, 44 seconds
We must realize that you and I cannot improve on the words in the holy scriptures.
1:03:57
1 hour, 3 minutes, 57 seconds
But instead of avoiding such words, we need to study them
1:04:05
1 hour, 4 minutes, 5 seconds
so that we can better understand the word of God.
1:04:11
1 hour, 4 minutes, 11 seconds
Today we want to learn something about sanctification which is also the theme for our home care group messages.
1:04:23
1 hour, 4 minutes, 23 seconds
To sanctify means to be made holy, be consecrated,
1:04:33
1 hour, 4 minutes, 33 seconds
be separated from what is sinful to be devoted to the Lord and to be set apart unto him.
1:04:45
1 hour, 4 minutes, 45 seconds
So it involves the idea of separation.
1:04:50
1 hour, 4 minutes, 50 seconds
It involves dedication and it involves purity.
1:04:59
1 hour, 4 minutes, 59 seconds
Sanctification is connected to our salvation.
1:05:06
1 hour, 5 minutes, 6 seconds
If you are a believer, an elect of God, who has chosen you even before the
1:05:13
1 hour, 5 minutes, 13 seconds
foundation of the world, then he will perform his sanctifying work in your life.
1:05:26
1 hour, 5 minutes, 26 seconds
Allow me to explain this.
1:05:29
1 hour, 5 minutes, 29 seconds
At the point of our conversions, when we first embraced Jesus Christ as
1:05:36
1 hour, 5 minutes, 36 seconds
our Lord and Savior, we have been justified in our sins.
1:05:42
1 hour, 5 minutes, 42 seconds
God sanctified us by setting us apart from sin onto himself.
1:05:53
1 hour, 5 minutes, 53 seconds
He separated us from darkness and unto his marvelous light.
1:06:01
1 hour, 6 minutes, 1 second
He set us apart from unbelief onto faith.
1:06:08
1 hour, 6 minutes, 8 seconds
That is our positional sanification whereby God declared us to be righteous
1:06:18
1 hour, 6 minutes, 18 seconds
by virtue of what our Lord Jesus has done for us on the cross at Calvary.
1:06:29
1 hour, 6 minutes, 29 seconds
One day we would be perfectly free from sin.
1:06:35
1 hour, 6 minutes, 35 seconds
We would be in perfect fellowship with God. And that day awaits us in the future.
1:06:45
1 hour, 6 minutes, 45 seconds
The day of glorification, the day of resurrection, the day when we see our savior face to
1:06:54
1 hour, 6 minutes, 54 seconds
face, we will be perfectly sanctified.
1:07:02
1 hour, 7 minutes, 2 seconds
That is our ultimate glorification.
1:07:10
1 hour, 7 minutes, 10 seconds
So what is in between?
1:07:15
1 hour, 7 minutes, 15 seconds
What is in between our justification and our glorification?
1:07:23
1 hour, 7 minutes, 23 seconds
Sanctification.
1:07:28
1 hour, 7 minutes, 28 seconds
As long as we live our lives on this earth in this mortal body, we do not change overnight.
1:07:37
1 hour, 7 minutes, 37 seconds
We are constantly being sanctified. If we are true believers,
1:07:45
1 hour, 7 minutes, 45 seconds
we are transformed and changed progressively and that is our progressive sanctification.
1:07:57
1 hour, 7 minutes, 57 seconds
So positionally we are sanctified.
1:08:00
1 hour, 8 minutes
Ultimately we would be sanctified but in the meantime we are being sanctified
1:08:10
1 hour, 8 minutes, 10 seconds
progressively every day of our lives.
1:08:15
1 hour, 8 minutes, 15 seconds
So here Paul was praying about a present work that needed to be done at this
1:08:23
1 hour, 8 minutes, 23 seconds
present moment while the Thessalonians were living their lives in this world.
1:08:33
1 hour, 8 minutes, 33 seconds
When the word sanctify is being used in the present tense, it always refers to a
1:08:41
1 hour, 8 minutes, 41 seconds
progressive work, something that is still ongoing.
1:08:47
1 hour, 8 minutes, 47 seconds
It is not yet finished and complete.
1:08:53
1 hour, 8 minutes, 53 seconds
So if you are a believer, you have been justified, saved,
1:09:00
1 hour, 9 minutes
and declared righteous because of the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross.
1:09:10
1 hour, 9 minutes, 10 seconds
But there's still work to be done in your life.
1:09:17
1 hour, 9 minutes, 17 seconds
There is no such thing as someone who has been justified [clears throat] and not being sanctified.
1:09:27
1 hour, 9 minutes, 27 seconds
Everyone who is a believer is being sanctified.
1:09:34
1 hour, 9 minutes, 34 seconds
Therefore, Paul was praying for the believers at Thessalonica, not for the their positional
1:09:44
1 hour, 9 minutes, 44 seconds
sanctification because they were already believers.
1:09:49
1 hour, 9 minutes, 49 seconds
He was praying for their progressive sanctification all the way until their ultimate sanctification.
1:10:00
1 hour, 10 minutes
How do we know?
1:10:02
1 hour, 10 minutes, 2 seconds
because of the phrase onto the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ
1:10:12
1 hour, 10 minutes, 12 seconds
that is about the rapture and that is in the future.
1:10:19
1 hour, 10 minutes, 19 seconds
So Paul was praying for their progressive sanctification and he said
1:10:26
1 hour, 10 minutes, 26 seconds
and the very God of peace sanctify you holy.
1:10:35
1 hour, 10 minutes, 35 seconds
Paul could have used the phrase the God of love or the God of grace or the God of mercy.
1:10:46
1 hour, 10 minutes, 46 seconds
But interestingly, he used the phrase the God of peace.
1:10:54
1 hour, 10 minutes, 54 seconds
Why did he do that? Peace has to do with our salvation.
1:11:04
1 hour, 11 minutes, 4 seconds
You see, without peace, we would be enemies of God.
1:11:10
1 hour, 11 minutes, 10 seconds
Because of our sins, we are not naturally at peace with God.
1:11:19
1 hour, 11 minutes, 19 seconds
We are at war with God.
1:11:22
1 hour, 11 minutes, 22 seconds
We are at war with each other and we are always at war with ourselves.
1:11:29
1 hour, 11 minutes, 29 seconds
That is why we experience much misery
1:11:36
1 hour, 11 minutes, 36 seconds
and there's so much unrest and chaos in this world.
1:11:44
1 hour, 11 minutes, 44 seconds
It is Christ who has broken down the emity between God and men
1:11:52
1 hour, 11 minutes, 52 seconds
through his death and the shedding of his precious blood.
1:12:00
1 hour, 12 minutes
So God is the source of true peace and that is why he is called the God of peace.
1:12:12
1 hour, 12 minutes, 12 seconds
Dear friend, if you are an unbeliever, you are not at peace with God.
1:12:21
1 hour, 12 minutes, 21 seconds
You may think that you have peace, but you are not at peace with God. In fact, you are an enemy of God.
1:12:34
1 hour, 12 minutes, 34 seconds
But he can give you this peace if you will come to him
1:12:42
1 hour, 12 minutes, 42 seconds
through Jesus Christ for salvation.
1:12:48
1 hour, 12 minutes, 48 seconds
Apart from Christ there is no peace.
1:12:55
1 hour, 12 minutes, 55 seconds
One day you will die and you will die as an enemy of God.
1:13:05
1 hour, 13 minutes, 5 seconds
You will stand before him in the horror of your sins on judgment day and be sent to eternal damnation.
1:13:19
1 hour, 13 minutes, 19 seconds
As believers, we not only have the God of peace,
1:13:26
1 hour, 13 minutes, 26 seconds
but we also experience the peace of God.
1:13:33
1 hour, 13 minutes, 33 seconds
Though life is filled with trials and troubles, at times we may be overwhelmed by worries and anxieties.
1:13:44
1 hour, 13 minutes, 44 seconds
We need to trust completely in what God has done for our salvation
1:13:50
1 hour, 13 minutes, 50 seconds
and we need to continuously trust in him.
1:13:56
1 hour, 13 minutes, 56 seconds
If we do that, Philippians 4:7 said,
1:14:02
1 hour, 14 minutes, 2 seconds
"And the peace of God which passes all understanding
1:14:09
1 hour, 14 minutes, 9 seconds
shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
1:14:16
1 hour, 14 minutes, 16 seconds
There may be troubles and afflictions and troubles of all sorts,
1:14:24
1 hour, 14 minutes, 24 seconds
but you will have the peace of God guarding and keeping your hearts and
1:14:32
1 hour, 14 minutes, 32 seconds
your minds through our Lord Jesus Christ. What a blessed promise.
1:14:41
1 hour, 14 minutes, 41 seconds
Let us learn some valuable lessons about sanctification from this passage
1:14:50
1 hour, 14 minutes, 50 seconds
because this is how we ought to pray for our church
1:14:56
1 hour, 14 minutes, 56 seconds
and the very God of peace sanctify you holy.
1:15:04
1 hour, 15 minutes, 4 seconds
Firstly, sanctification is an expression of our love.
1:15:12
1 hour, 15 minutes, 12 seconds
The apostle Paul loved the people and he had already expressed his love
1:15:19
1 hour, 15 minutes, 19 seconds
for the Thessalonians throughout his letters.
1:15:27
1 hour, 15 minutes, 27 seconds
What does a pastor want for his people?
1:15:33
1 hour, 15 minutes, 33 seconds
What does a parent want for his or her child?
1:15:41
1 hour, 15 minutes, 41 seconds
What does a Sunday school teacher want for the little ones?
1:15:49
1 hour, 15 minutes, 49 seconds
If we truly have this love for our brothers and sisters in Christ, then this must be our main concern.
1:16:03
1 hour, 16 minutes, 3 seconds
that they may be sanctified.
1:16:11
1 hour, 16 minutes, 11 seconds
Do you realize that sometimes we can be so concerned about
1:16:18
1 hour, 16 minutes, 18 seconds
the number of spiritual activities we have been attending?
1:16:24
1 hour, 16 minutes, 24 seconds
We can be so bogged down by the routines of attending those
1:16:34
1 hour, 16 minutes, 34 seconds
fellowship meetings and ministries.
1:16:40
1 hour, 16 minutes, 40 seconds
So much so that we do not even know why we are doing what we are doing.
1:16:47
1 hour, 16 minutes, 47 seconds
We are just going through the motion.
1:16:52
1 hour, 16 minutes, 52 seconds
We forget our main concern and our main goal.
1:17:00
1 hour, 17 minutes
If you are a parent, what is the goal and aim of your parenting?
1:17:09
1 hour, 17 minutes, 9 seconds
As parents, often times we will get so frustrated with the behavior of our children
1:17:17
1 hour, 17 minutes, 17 seconds
that we will discipline them and even lose our temple and shout at them.
1:17:30
1 hour, 17 minutes, 30 seconds
But behind the screaming, what do we really want?
1:17:38
1 hour, 17 minutes, 38 seconds
Is it just about our children behaving themselves and doing what we think is right?
1:17:51
1 hour, 17 minutes, 51 seconds
If you are a Sunday school teacher, what is the goal and aim of you preparing the Sunday school lessons?
1:18:02
1 hour, 18 minutes, 2 seconds
It is just because of filling in the slot
1:18:10
1 hour, 18 minutes, 10 seconds
because it happens that you are the one assigned to do the Sunday school for that week.
1:18:22
1 hour, 18 minutes, 22 seconds
Is that all that is to it?
1:18:27
1 hour, 18 minutes, 27 seconds
If you are a preacher, what is your goal and aim?
1:18:33
1 hour, 18 minutes, 33 seconds
Is it just to fill the pull pit and then finish the one hour of preaching?
1:18:44
1 hour, 18 minutes, 44 seconds
Our goal and aim is always about this
1:18:50
1 hour, 18 minutes, 50 seconds
that souls will be saved and the people will be sanctified.
1:19:00
1 hour, 19 minutes
The people whom God has placed under our cares are growing in sanctification,
1:19:08
1 hour, 19 minutes, 8 seconds
in holiness and becoming more and more like Christ.
1:19:17
1 hour, 19 minutes, 17 seconds
If this is your main aim and goal, then you should pray, right?
1:19:30
1 hour, 19 minutes, 30 seconds
Sanctification is a supernatural work.
1:19:35
1 hour, 19 minutes, 35 seconds
Notice the phrase says, "And the very God of peace sanctify you
1:19:41
1 hour, 19 minutes, 41 seconds
holy," which means God himself is the one who can and will sanctify you.
1:19:50
1 hour, 19 minutes, 50 seconds
I want you to consider this statement very seriously.
1:19:56
1 hour, 19 minutes, 56 seconds
God is personally involved in the development
1:20:04
1 hour, 20 minutes, 4 seconds
of you as a spiritual person.
1:20:11
1 hour, 20 minutes, 11 seconds
He is personally involved in your sanctification in you being holy.
1:20:21
1 hour, 20 minutes, 21 seconds
Can you fathom that God himself is working in your life to
1:20:29
1 hour, 20 minutes, 29 seconds
make you into the person he wants you to be into the person that pleases him.
1:20:39
1 hour, 20 minutes, 39 seconds
God is the one who produces sanctification.
1:20:47
1 hour, 20 minutes, 47 seconds
You can have the most theologically trained pastor
1:20:55
1 hour, 20 minutes, 55 seconds
or you can have the most knowledgeable parent
1:21:02
1 hour, 21 minutes, 2 seconds
or you can have the most qualified Sunday school teacher.
1:21:08
1 hour, 21 minutes, 8 seconds
But if God is not sanctifying the person you are ministering to, that person would not be sanctified.
1:21:21
1 hour, 21 minutes, 21 seconds
We can spend all our time and efforts creating the best programs in the church,
1:21:30
1 hour, 21 minutes, 30 seconds
but you and I can never create spiritual growth.
1:21:38
1 hour, 21 minutes, 38 seconds
Only God alone creates the growth.
1:21:45
1 hour, 21 minutes, 45 seconds
This will teach us whom we ought to depend on.
1:21:53
1 hour, 21 minutes, 53 seconds
So as we pray for sanctification, we ask ourselves who is going to sanctify us.
1:22:01
1 hour, 22 minutes, 1 second
How are we going to be sanctified?
1:22:05
1 hour, 22 minutes, 5 seconds
The God of peace is the one who will sanctify us.
1:22:11
1 hour, 22 minutes, 11 seconds
God alone produces fruit.
1:22:17
1 hour, 22 minutes, 17 seconds
He may bless some in the church with spiritual gifts to teach others about
1:22:24
1 hour, 22 minutes, 24 seconds
disciplehip and sanctification, but they are at best his instruments.
1:22:32
1 hour, 22 minutes, 32 seconds
Only he alone produces sanctification.
1:22:40
1 hour, 22 minutes, 40 seconds
How does God sanctified us?
1:22:43
1 hour, 22 minutes, 43 seconds
Primarily God sanctifies us through the wonderworking of his holy spirit.
1:22:52
1 hour, 22 minutes, 52 seconds
And the instrument in which the Holy Spirit uses to sanctify us is through
1:23:01
1 hour, 23 minutes, 1 second
the Bible, the word of God.
1:23:07
1 hour, 23 minutes, 7 seconds
Ephesians 5:26 said, "That he might sanctify and cleanse the church
1:23:15
1 hour, 23 minutes, 15 seconds
with the washing of water by the word.
1:23:23
1 hour, 23 minutes, 23 seconds
That is why you and I must never neglect the word of God and then expect to grow.
1:23:36
1 hour, 23 minutes, 36 seconds
We cannot neglect the reading of the Bible, the study,
1:23:43
1 hour, 23 minutes, 43 seconds
meditation and memorizing of the word,
1:23:50
1 hour, 23 minutes, 50 seconds
hearing the word and then expect ourselves to grow in sanctification.
1:23:58
1 hour, 23 minutes, 58 seconds
That will never happen. God is the author of the Bible.
1:24:05
1 hour, 24 minutes, 5 seconds
He's the one who teaches the word of God. He's the one who uses the word of
1:24:10
1 hour, 24 minutes, 10 seconds
God and empowers us to walk in his truth in sanctification in holiness.
1:24:24
1 hour, 24 minutes, 24 seconds
Next, God involves people to help in the sanctification.
1:24:33
1 hour, 24 minutes, 33 seconds
Do you realize that God has gifted certain people in the church with spiritual gifts to help others in
1:24:42
1 hour, 24 minutes, 42 seconds
their sanctification in their spiritual growth?
1:24:51
1 hour, 24 minutes, 51 seconds
God wants us to grow in the context of the church family.
1:24:59
1 hour, 24 minutes, 59 seconds
We are a spiritual family.
1:25:05
1 hour, 25 minutes, 5 seconds
That is why we have pastors, teachers, elders, and deacons.
1:25:14
1 hour, 25 minutes, 14 seconds
Take a moment and think of our natural family.
1:25:19
1 hour, 25 minutes, 19 seconds
We have our fathers, our mothers and children.
1:25:26
1 hour, 25 minutes, 26 seconds
The father is the one who leads.
1:25:30
1 hour, 25 minutes, 30 seconds
The mother is the one who submits and assist
1:25:38
1 hour, 25 minutes, 38 seconds
as the helper and the children obey the parents.
1:25:47
1 hour, 25 minutes, 47 seconds
As the children grow and have their own families,
1:25:54
1 hour, 25 minutes, 54 seconds
they in turn will lead and teach their own families.
1:26:03
1 hour, 26 minutes, 3 seconds
And this cycle [snorts] is repeated as long as our Lord Jesus would tar in his return.
1:26:15
1 hour, 26 minutes, 15 seconds
In a similar fashion, that is how God deals with the church family.
1:26:23
1 hour, 26 minutes, 23 seconds
God has blessed us with evangelists, pastors and teachers.
1:26:34
1 hour, 26 minutes, 34 seconds
They have lived and they have died. And God raised up other evangelists, pastors and teachers.
1:26:45
1 hour, 26 minutes, 45 seconds
They continued to live and died. And then God will raise others. For what purpose?
1:26:56
1 hour, 26 minutes, 56 seconds
Well, Ephesians 4:12 said, "For the perfecting of the saints,
1:27:04
1 hour, 27 minutes, 4 seconds
for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
1:27:11
1 hour, 27 minutes, 11 seconds
and for how long do we all come in the unity of the faith
1:27:18
1 hour, 27 minutes, 18 seconds
and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man,
1:27:25
1 hour, 27 minutes, 25 seconds
unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
1:27:32
1 hour, 27 minutes, 32 seconds
Perfect does not mean sinless. It means a complete spiritually mature person.
1:27:44
1 hour, 27 minutes, 44 seconds
And none of us can ever reach the level of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:27:54
1 hour, 27 minutes, 54 seconds
We can only reach certain measures of his stature.
1:28:01
1 hour, 28 minutes, 1 second
We will grow to be more and more like him.
1:28:05
1 hour, 28 minutes, 5 seconds
But we can never be him.
1:28:11
1 hour, 28 minutes, 11 seconds
The pastors and teachers are to teach and disciple the people so that they may grow in the knowledge of Christ.
1:28:22
1 hour, 28 minutes, 22 seconds
be sanctified and mature spiritually.
1:28:30
1 hour, 28 minutes, 30 seconds
When we look around ourselves, we can see people within the church of
1:28:37
1 hour, 28 minutes, 37 seconds
different levels of spiritual maturity.
1:28:44
1 hour, 28 minutes, 44 seconds
Some people are so good at considering others. This person is not spiritual.
1:28:55
1 hour, 28 minutes, 55 seconds
That person is spiritual.
1:28:58
1 hour, 28 minutes, 58 seconds
This person does not behave like a Christian.
1:29:05
1 hour, 29 minutes, 5 seconds
That person surely is a Christian.
1:29:08
1 hour, 29 minutes, 8 seconds
People are very good at looking at others. But what about themselves?
1:29:17
1 hour, 29 minutes, 17 seconds
Have we ever asked ourselves how am I growing as a Christian?
1:29:26
1 hour, 29 minutes, 26 seconds
Am I living a sanctified life?
1:29:34
1 hour, 29 minutes, 34 seconds
Some people will gauge spiritual maturity by ascertaining how much the believer
1:29:42
1 hour, 29 minutes, 42 seconds
knows the Bible or how prayerful he is or how
1:29:52
1 hour, 29 minutes, 52 seconds
he's serving the Lord, how much time he spends in the fellowship group meetings as etc.
1:30:03
1 hour, 30 minutes, 3 seconds
While all these spiritual activities are good, the best answer is
1:30:11
1 hour, 30 minutes, 11 seconds
we measure our lives against the life of Jesus Christ,
1:30:19
1 hour, 30 minutes, 19 seconds
the perfect God man.
1:30:25
1 hour, 30 minutes, 25 seconds
We can never be like Christ as I mentioned before but we can grow to become more and more
1:30:34
1 hour, 30 minutes, 34 seconds
like him and that is what you and I should live our lives.
1:30:44
1 hour, 30 minutes, 44 seconds
Sanctification is a thorough work.
1:30:50
1 hour, 30 minutes, 50 seconds
Look at the phrase and the very God of peace sanctify you holy. The word holy means entirely or completely.
1:31:01
1 hour, 31 minutes, 1 second
And I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless
1:31:10
1 hour, 31 minutes, 10 seconds
unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:31:17
1 hour, 31 minutes, 17 seconds
Allow me to say this.
1:31:20
1 hour, 31 minutes, 20 seconds
This is a verse that the dichotomy and tricotomy
1:31:28
1 hour, 31 minutes, 28 seconds
controversy would surface and often quoted and debated.
1:31:43
1 hour, 31 minutes, 43 seconds
Basically those who believe in tricotomy would argue that man is made up of three
1:31:51
1 hour, 31 minutes, 51 seconds
parts body, soul and spirit.
1:32:02
1 hour, 32 minutes, 2 seconds
Those who believe in dichotomy say that man is made up of only two parts.
1:32:13
1 hour, 32 minutes, 13 seconds
Body, soul and spirit are one.
1:32:18
1 hour, 32 minutes, 18 seconds
Soul and spirit are used interchangeably.
1:32:26
1 hour, 32 minutes, 26 seconds
We believe in dichotomy. Man is made up of only two parts.
1:32:34
1 hour, 32 minutes, 34 seconds
Body, soul or spirit.
1:32:43
1 hour, 32 minutes, 43 seconds
One is material, the body, the other is
1:32:51
1 hour, 32 minutes, 51 seconds
non-material, the soul or spirit.
1:32:57
1 hour, 32 minutes, 57 seconds
That is why 2 Corinthians 5:8 said, "We are confident, I say, and
1:33:05
1 hour, 33 minutes, 5 seconds
willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord."
1:33:14
1 hour, 33 minutes, 14 seconds
Take note what is absent from the body and what is present
1:33:23
1 hour, 33 minutes, 23 seconds
with the Lord the soul or the spirit.
1:33:33
1 hour, 33 minutes, 33 seconds
If we are going to embrace tricotomy which means man is made up of three parts
1:33:41
1 hour, 33 minutes, 41 seconds
simply based on 1 Thessalonians 5:23
1:33:48
1 hour, 33 minutes, 48 seconds
then what are we going to do when we come to verses like thou shalt love the Lord with all thy soul with all thy
1:33:56
1 hour, 33 minutes, 56 seconds
heart with all thy mind and with all thy strength doesn't mean that man has four parts.
1:34:06
1 hour, 34 minutes, 6 seconds
Most certainly not.
1:34:09
1 hour, 34 minutes, 9 seconds
So what Paul meant here is completely thoroughly entirely
1:34:18
1 hour, 34 minutes, 18 seconds
every facet of our inner man and
1:34:25
1 hour, 34 minutes, 25 seconds
our physical man be set apart unto God.
1:34:33
1 hour, 34 minutes, 33 seconds
In other words, you be set apart unto God. Be sanctified.
1:34:44
1 hour, 34 minutes, 44 seconds
So may God change your thinking.
1:34:46
1 hour, 34 minutes, 46 seconds
May God change your attitude. May God change your motives and choices
1:34:55
1 hour, 34 minutes, 55 seconds
so that in every way your life will not reflect the way of the world but will reflect the way of Jesus Christ.
1:35:09
1 hour, 35 minutes, 9 seconds
May the Lord [clears throat] sanctify you completely holy.
1:35:17
1 hour, 35 minutes, 17 seconds
That is what it means.
1:35:21
1 hour, 35 minutes, 21 seconds
Wherever we are lacking, that is where God would do his sanctifying work in us.
1:35:35
1 hour, 35 minutes, 35 seconds
Take a moment and think about this.
1:35:38
1 hour, 35 minutes, 38 seconds
Our thinking needs to improve, right? Our attitudes needs to improve.
1:35:50
1 hour, 35 minutes, 50 seconds
Our minds need to change.
1:35:56
1 hour, 35 minutes, 56 seconds
Can anyone say that his or her motives are always true and sincere?
1:36:05
1 hour, 36 minutes, 5 seconds
No man can.
1:36:09
1 hour, 36 minutes, 9 seconds
Which means God will continue to do his sanctifying work in our lives.
1:36:19
1 hour, 36 minutes, 19 seconds
He is not finished with us yet. He is still working in us.
1:36:29
1 hour, 36 minutes, 29 seconds
Next sanctification is a persevering work.
1:36:36
1 hour, 36 minutes, 36 seconds
Your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless.
1:36:45
1 hour, 36 minutes, 45 seconds
To preserve is to guard and keep.
1:36:51
1 hour, 36 minutes, 51 seconds
We have been commanded to guard our hearts because out of it comes the issues of life.
1:37:01
1 hour, 37 minutes, 1 second
We are commanded to guard our tongues because it is like a fire.
1:37:10
1 hour, 37 minutes, 10 seconds
It will destroy us.
1:37:14
1 hour, 37 minutes, 14 seconds
We have been commanded to guard our thoughts because out of it
1:37:22
1 hour, 37 minutes, 22 seconds
will be manifested into our actions and behaviors.
1:37:29
1 hour, 37 minutes, 29 seconds
God is the only one who is able to preserve God and keep us.
1:37:40
1 hour, 37 minutes, 40 seconds
If God were to withdraw his preserving grace from us even for the brief moment, we are finished.
1:37:50
1 hour, 37 minutes, 50 seconds
The God who has saved us will continue to save us and preserve us.
1:37:59
1 hour, 37 minutes, 59 seconds
The way we are preserved and kept in the Christian life is through sanctification.
1:38:12
1 hour, 38 minutes, 12 seconds
Since the day of your conversion, when you embrace Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior,
1:38:21
1 hour, 38 minutes, 21 seconds
God has already begun this sanctifying work in you.
1:38:28
1 hour, 38 minutes, 28 seconds
And [clears throat] where there is sanification, there must be this transformed life.
1:38:38
1 hour, 38 minutes, 38 seconds
There must be this radical change in your life.
1:38:46
1 hour, 38 minutes, 46 seconds
A story was told of a young girl who accepted Christ as her savior
1:38:53
1 hour, 38 minutes, 53 seconds
and she applied for membership in the local church.
1:38:57
1 hour, 38 minutes, 57 seconds
The pastor asked her, "Were you a sinner before you received the Lord Jesus into
1:39:06
1 hour, 39 minutes, 6 seconds
your life?" [snorts] "Yes," she replied.
1:39:12
1 hour, 39 minutes, 12 seconds
Well, are you still a sinner? The pastor asked. The girl replied.
1:39:20
1 hour, 39 minutes, 20 seconds
To tell you the truth, I feel I am a greater sinner than before.
1:39:29
1 hour, 39 minutes, 29 seconds
Then what real change have you experienced?
1:39:37
1 hour, 39 minutes, 37 seconds
I don't quite know how to explain it. He said or she said,
1:39:44
1 hour, 39 minutes, 44 seconds
"Except I used to be a sinner running after sin,
1:39:53
1 hour, 39 minutes, 53 seconds
but now that I'm saved, I'm a sinner running
1:40:01
1 hour, 40 minutes, 1 second
away from sin." How true?
1:40:09
1 hour, 40 minutes, 9 seconds
There must be this radical change in our lives if God is doing his sanctifying work in us.
1:40:21
1 hour, 40 minutes, 21 seconds
Next, our great responsibility in our own sanctification.
1:40:28
1 hour, 40 minutes, 28 seconds
Indeed, God has blessed us with all spiritual blessings.
1:40:33
1 hour, 40 minutes, 33 seconds
Everything that pertains to life and godliness, he has given to us through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:40:42
1 hour, 40 minutes, 42 seconds
We always have needs. We are always lacking.
1:40:47
1 hour, 40 minutes, 47 seconds
That is why we depend on the Lord Jesus moment by moment, day by day.
1:40:57
1 hour, 40 minutes, 57 seconds
There will never come a time whereby we do not need him.
1:41:04
1 hour, 41 minutes, 4 seconds
But that does not mean that we do not need to do anything when it comes to our sanctification.
1:41:13
1 hour, 41 minutes, 13 seconds
Just sit and do nothing and let God do his work.
1:41:21
1 hour, 41 minutes, 21 seconds
We have a great responsibility in our own sanctification,
1:41:28
1 hour, 41 minutes, 28 seconds
in our own holiness and godliness, in our commitment to live a righteous life.
1:41:38
1 hour, 41 minutes, 38 seconds
Listen to the words of First Thessalonians 4:3-4.
1:41:45
1 hour, 41 minutes, 45 seconds
For this is the will of God, even your sanctification,
1:41:52
1 hour, 41 minutes, 52 seconds
that ye should abstain from fornication, that every one of you should know how to
1:42:00
1 hour, 42 minutes
possess his vessel in sanctification and honor.
1:42:08
1 hour, 42 minutes, 8 seconds
It is our responsibility to abstain from sin and fornication.
1:42:15
1 hour, 42 minutes, 15 seconds
It is our responsibility to know how to control our vessel or our
1:42:22
1 hour, 42 minutes, 22 seconds
body to exercise self-control to say no when it comes to sin.
1:42:32
1 hour, 42 minutes, 32 seconds
If we allow this body to commit adultery, if we allow this tongue to gossip and
1:42:41
1 hour, 42 minutes, 41 seconds
slander, if we allow this mind to be filled with immoral thoughts
1:42:50
1 hour, 42 minutes, 50 seconds
and wicked things, if we allow these hands to steal,
1:42:59
1 hour, 42 minutes, 59 seconds
then we are not living a sanctified life. but a sinful life.
1:43:06
1 hour, 43 minutes, 6 seconds
We have a responsibility.
1:43:10
1 hour, 43 minutes, 10 seconds
There is God's sovereignty and human responsibility in play in our sanctification.
1:43:20
1 hour, 43 minutes, 20 seconds
Rather than yielding to temptation through the empowerment of the Holy
1:43:27
1 hour, 43 minutes, 27 seconds
Spirit and his word, we seek to live a blameless life.
1:43:35
1 hour, 43 minutes, 35 seconds
And God will preserve us blameless until when?
1:43:43
1 hour, 43 minutes, 43 seconds
until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, until the rapture of the church, until Jesus comes in the clouds for us.
1:43:55
1 hour, 43 minutes, 55 seconds
To be blameless does not mean that we are sinless, for no man is perfect.
1:44:04
1 hour, 44 minutes, 4 seconds
To be blameless means to be above reproach.
1:44:08
1 hour, 44 minutes, 8 seconds
In other words, our Christian testimony should not be in question.
1:44:18
1 hour, 44 minutes, 18 seconds
There should be nothing which people can accuse us of.
1:44:26
1 hour, 44 minutes, 26 seconds
Yes, we may have sinned, but we repent. We do not remain in sin.
1:44:37
1 hour, 44 minutes, 37 seconds
We should always maintain a good and upright reputation
1:44:43
1 hour, 44 minutes, 43 seconds
never to give the enemies of the gospel reasons to attack our Christian faith.
1:44:54
1 hour, 44 minutes, 54 seconds
What about you, my friend? Have you lived such a life?
1:45:01
1 hour, 45 minutes, 1 second
Have you been endeavoring to live such a life?
1:45:08
1 hour, 45 minutes, 8 seconds
Finally, our sanification is certain.
1:45:16
1 hour, 45 minutes, 16 seconds
Look at the last phrase. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
1:45:28
1 hour, 45 minutes, 28 seconds
As believers, we have been called.
1:45:32
1 hour, 45 minutes, 32 seconds
We have been justified. Our sins have been forgiven and washed by the precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:45:42
1 hour, 45 minutes, 42 seconds
We are being sanctified on the daily basis.
1:45:47
1 hour, 45 minutes, 47 seconds
And one day we will be sanctified
1:45:53
1 hour, 45 minutes, 53 seconds
perfectly completely.
1:45:59
1 hour, 45 minutes, 59 seconds
God will not send someone else to complete it. He will not send an angel to complete it.
1:46:09
1 hour, 46 minutes, 9 seconds
He himself will complete it personally in and through our lives by his spirit.
1:46:23
1 hour, 46 minutes, 23 seconds
Philippians 1:6 said, "Being confident of this very thing,
1:46:30
1 hour, 46 minutes, 30 seconds
that he which have begun a good work in you, saving you,
1:46:36
1 hour, 46 minutes, 36 seconds
will perform it, which means will complete it until the day of Jesus
1:46:44
1 hour, 46 minutes, 44 seconds
Christ." This is God's pledge to every believer.
1:46:51
1 hour, 46 minutes, 51 seconds
Every one of us. [snorts] The God who has sanctified us at our conversions
1:47:00
1 hour, 47 minutes
will continue to sanctify us every day of our lives and ultimately he will perfectly
1:47:08
1 hour, 47 minutes, 8 seconds
sanctify us at our glorification.
1:47:14
1 hour, 47 minutes, 14 seconds
He will perform it, complete it by himself.
1:47:25
1 hour, 47 minutes, 25 seconds
When a person claimed to be a Christian,
1:47:31
1 hour, 47 minutes, 31 seconds
there would be some changes in his life, especially when
1:47:40
1 hour, 47 minutes, 40 seconds
he came from an immoral background
1:47:47
1 hour, 47 minutes, 47 seconds
or a background of unbelievers.
1:47:55
1 hour, 47 minutes, 55 seconds
If he was a drug addict, he might stop taking drugs,
1:48:02
1 hour, 48 minutes, 2 seconds
if he was an alcoholic, he might give up alcohol.
1:48:11
1 hour, 48 minutes, 11 seconds
If he was a gambler, he might give up gambling.
1:48:17
1 hour, 48 minutes, 17 seconds
If he was an adulterer, he might turn away from his immoral lifestyle.
1:48:27
1 hour, 48 minutes, 27 seconds
We all have heard some of these lifechanging testimonies,
1:48:36
1 hour, 48 minutes, 36 seconds
but sad to say, many professed believers just stop there.
1:48:46
1 hour, 48 minutes, 46 seconds
What we mean? What do we mean by that?
1:48:49
1 hour, 48 minutes, 49 seconds
[clears throat]
1:48:50
1 hour, 48 minutes, 50 seconds
They do not go on to live a sanctified life.
1:48:58
1 hour, 48 minutes, 58 seconds
They do not deal with the other sins in their lives which may not be that obvious.
1:49:06
1 hour, 49 minutes, 6 seconds
Sins like pride, bitterness, anger, envy, jealousy, etc.
1:49:16
1 hour, 49 minutes, 16 seconds
All they focused on were the obvious sins like drug taking, alcohol, drinking, living an adulterous life.
1:49:30
1 hour, 49 minutes, 30 seconds
But what about the other sins?
1:49:34
1 hour, 49 minutes, 34 seconds
Holy means completely every aspects of our lives, not just one.
1:49:45
1 hour, 49 minutes, 45 seconds
So if you and I truly understand the meaning of sanctification
1:49:52
1 hour, 49 minutes, 52 seconds
in our lives, then we ought to know that it is a supernatural work.
1:49:59
1 hour, 49 minutes, 59 seconds
God is personally involved in our spiritual development. As a Christian,
1:50:09
1 hour, 50 minutes, 9 seconds
we also have a responsibility to respond to it.
1:50:15
1 hour, 50 minutes, 15 seconds
Then the question is how then can we not change?
1:50:25
1 hour, 50 minutes, 25 seconds
God forbids. Are you a believer?
1:50:33
1 hour, 50 minutes, 33 seconds
How can you be assured of your salvation?
1:50:37
1 hour, 50 minutes, 37 seconds
How can you be assured of the salvation of your children
1:50:45
1 hour, 50 minutes, 45 seconds
just simply by the profession of their faith?
1:50:50
1 hour, 50 minutes, 50 seconds
We are assured of our salvation when we see God's spirit
1:50:59
1 hour, 50 minutes, 59 seconds
and God's work working in our lives sanctifying us on a daily basis.
1:51:13
1 hour, 51 minutes, 13 seconds
And the Bible tells us, "It is not by might nor by power,
1:51:22
1 hour, 51 minutes, 22 seconds
but by my spirit, saith the Lord."
1:51:29
1 hour, 51 minutes, 29 seconds
So it is the wonderworking of God's spirit and his work in our lives sanctifying us.
1:51:41
1 hour, 51 minutes, 41 seconds
So this is what you and I must pray for our church that be better church will be sanctified.
1:51:53
1 hour, 51 minutes, 53 seconds
The pastor cannot do it. The elders and deacons cannot do it.
1:52:01
1 hour, 52 minutes, 1 second
Nor can the members do it.
1:52:05
1 hour, 52 minutes, 5 seconds
Only God alone creates sanification and we simply
1:52:14
1 hour, 52 minutes, 14 seconds
responds to his supernatural work in obedience
1:52:24
1 hour, 52 minutes, 24 seconds
and then we will be able to see his sanctifying work in our lives.
1:52:31
1 hour, 52 minutes, 31 seconds
Once we see that happening in our lives and we are growing from day to day from strength to
1:52:41
1 hour, 52 minutes, 41 seconds
strength from faith to faith then we are assured in our hearts that we are truly the children of God.
1:52:55
1 hour, 52 minutes, 55 seconds
What a blessing.
1:52:58
1 hour, 52 minutes, 58 seconds
Let us pray. Our Father in heaven, we give thanks for this opportunity for
1:53:06
1 hour, 53 minutes, 6 seconds
us to learn how we ought to pray for our church.
1:53:13
1 hour, 53 minutes, 13 seconds
As we have begun last week, we continue to learn how we ought to pray.
1:53:20
1 hour, 53 minutes, 20 seconds
And this morning, thou has taught us the way the Apostle Paul prayed
1:53:28
1 hour, 53 minutes, 28 seconds
for the Thessalonians in regards to their sanctification.
1:53:35
1 hour, 53 minutes, 35 seconds
This ought to be the same way we pray for our church.
1:53:41
1 hour, 53 minutes, 41 seconds
That better be BB church be sanctified.
1:53:46
1 hour, 53 minutes, 46 seconds
That the members, the regular worshippers who desire to live this sanctified life.
1:53:56
1 hour, 53 minutes, 56 seconds
And thou has taught us all the valuable lessons about what is the true meaning of sanctification.
1:54:06
1 hour, 54 minutes, 6 seconds
Help us to apply all this truth into our lives. For we have only one life to live.
1:54:15
1 hour, 54 minutes, 15 seconds
And we want to live this one life in sanctification, in holiness,
1:54:23
1 hour, 54 minutes, 23 seconds
in righteousness, and godliness, all to the glory of thee.
1:54:31
1 hour, 54 minutes, 31 second
