Highlights
any sexual pleasure outside of marriage is outside of God’s plan and will bring God’s wrath
at first glance, as long as one does not commit the act of adultery, he or she is alright…
what does it mean to commit adultery?
the simplest answer is that adultery is marital unfaithfulness. a sexual relationship that breaks the bonds of a marriage covenant. the primary purpose of the covenant is to protect marriage. it breaks the promise before God.
for this reason the penalty was so severe that leviticus says…
god blessed the couple with sexual pleasure only for each other. and not outside marriage.
used to illustrate the exclusive relationship between God and his people. he wants us to give himself to him without holding back.
i speak concerning mystery of christ and the church.
he was using the concept of one husband and wife to illustrate the exclusive union of christ and the church! it was very serious.
the sexual relationship in marriage can seal or break the marriage covenant. god takes it very seriously. he will do everything he can to protect it.
therefore this commandment forbids more than just the physical act of adultery.
preservation of our own purity and our neighbours purity. forbids all kinds of impure words thoughts and actions.
most adultery does not begin with physical act but in the thoughts!
why do we practice distancing our selves from someone who is not our husband or wife? to prevent us from falling into sin.
sexual purity also applies to singles.
until a couple is married, they do not have the right to enjoy the sexual relationship that is exclusively…
the question is not “how far we can go?”
we should be asking how can we preserve our personal purity? how can i preserve the purity of the person whom God has brought into our life?
this commandment rules out any form of sexual immorality, or as the new testament says, fornication.
marriage is the remedy that God gives to all those that struggles with these sins.
what about those who cannot find life partners?
this commandment not only covers the… but the inward thoughts as well, the desires of the heart.
looking is not the problem. looking with sexual arousal is the problem (paraphrasing)
we must be careful because a lot of people are not concerned with sins of the heart because they think that no one else knows, but God knows… and he sees into the innermost of our hearts…
the solution
an idle mind is the devil’s workshop
when we are not doing what God has commanded us to do; when we isolate ourselves from others, especially Christian fellowship, then we are most vulnerable.
the eye is a window to sinful desires.
be careful never to let our glance become a gaze.
make a commitment not to gaze.
nip it in the bud.
he found himself starting to fanaticise. rather than running from the temptation… so he sent messengers to … that should have
remember: lust had already captivated him…
that is how lust works: it takes on a power of its own, pulling us deeper and deeper until we find ourselves powerless to resist it.
although long before that he committed adultery with her in his heart…
no one knows… but God knows. you must repent. and turn to the only one who can forgive you. and that is the lord Jesus Christ. as david cried in psalm 51, cleanse me, wash me. he will cleanse you. but you must repent.
we must never play the fool with sin. we must resist it.
how to resist?
- flee - run. the moment you sense something is tempting you, run as far and as fast as you can.
- follow the path of righteousness. turn from the path of sin.
- fight
