The Evidence Of Our Salvation (Colossians 1:23a)
I greet all of you in the blessed name 61:02 - of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our 61:06 - text for today's message is taken from 61:09 - Colossians 1 verse 23 the first part. 61:15 - Allow me to read for you. 61:17 - If you continue in the faith grounded 61:20 - and settled and be not moved away from 61:24 - the hope of the gospel which ye have 61:27 - heard and which was preached to every 61:30 - creature which is under heaven. 61:36 - Have you ever doubted your salvation? 61:40 - Have you ever questioned your faith? 61:43 - Have you ever asked yourself, "I have 61:46 - believed in the gospel. 61:49 - I have called out to Jesus to save me 61:52 - and forgive all my sins. 61:56 - But how do I know if I am not like one 62:00 - of those whom Jesus said, "Not everyone 62:05 - that saith unto me,"Lord, Lord, shall 62:08 - enter into the kingdom of heaven. 62:11 - Depart from me, ye workers of 62:14 - iniquities. 62:16 - I never knew you." 62:19 - Perhaps there are times when you 62:24 - have doubted and questioned the 62:27 - genuiness of 62:29 - your salvation. 62:32 - In times of doubt, 62:34 - we want to be assured, validated, and 62:38 - affirmed in our hearts. 62:42 - And one of the most significant marks of 62:45 - a true believer 62:48 - is the evidence of faith 62:51 - demonstrated 62:53 - through his life. 62:55 - And this is what we want to learn from 62:58 - this one verse. 63:01 - The title of our message is 63:04 - the evidence of our salvation.
I. We Will Continue In The Faith
The first evidence of our salvation is 63:12 - that 63:14 - we will continue in the faith. 63:20 - The apostle Paul said to the Colossians, 63:23 - "If ye continue in the faith, 63:28 - the usage of the word if is not to cast 63:32 - doubts as to whether or not we will 63:34 - continue, 63:36 - but rather if we are truly saved, then 63:40 - this is what will happen. We will 63:43 - continue in the faith. 63:46 - To continue is to abide or to remain. 63:52 - If I may simply put it, 63:55 - it does not mean yesterday I believed 63:59 - but today I'm not so sure. 64:02 - Or yesterday I am in the faith but today 64:06 - I am throwing in the tower. 64:11 - If we are capable of giving up our 64:13 - faith, 64:15 - then what we have professed to believe 64:17 - in is not true and genuine in the first 64:21 - place. 64:24 - In the Gospel of Luke 8:13, 64:28 - Jesus said 64:32 - in the parable of the swer 64:35 - about the seeds that fell on a rock 64:39 - that they are those 64:42 - who heard the word, receive it with joy, 64:47 - but there are no roots. 64:52 - And for a while they believed. 64:57 - But in times of persecutions and 65:01 - troubles and temptations 65:04 - they fall away. 65:07 - In John chapter 6:66, 65:11 - after Jesus taught those so-called 65:14 - disciples many difficult and challenging 65:18 - teachings, 65:20 - the Bible tells us 65:23 - from that time onwards, 65:27 - many of those disciples went back 65:32 - and walked no more with him. 65:36 - The Apostle John also said in 1 John 65:39 - chapter 2:1 19, "They went out from us, 65:44 - but they were not of us. For if they had 65:48 - been of us, they would no doubt have 65:51 - continued with us, but they went out 65:56 - that they might be made manifest, that 65:58 - they were not all of us." 66:03 - Who were those people who fell away, 66:08 - went back and no more walked with Jesus 66:12 - or left the apostles, 66:16 - the false believers, 66:19 - people who only paid lip services, but 66:23 - in reality they did not believe. 66:29 - Sadly, we do see this scenario happening 66:33 - in our churches 66:39 - in modern times too. 66:42 - In fact, even more so, 66:46 - we have heard of people who left the 66:49 - church 66:51 - not to attend another bibleelving 66:53 - church, 66:55 - but they stop worshiping God altogether. 67:00 - We have heard of people even 67:03 - returning to their idolatrous worship, 67:07 - atheistic beliefs 67:09 - and become god deniers. 67:13 - When they do that, they are giving 67:15 - evidence that they had never truly 67:20 - believed. 67:23 - In other words, to continue in the faith 67:27 - is to persevere in the faith. 67:32 - We love the doctrine, once safe, always 67:36 - safe, don't we? As Jesus himself said, 67:40 - "No man can pluck you out of my hand." 67:47 - But that once saved always saved 67:50 - also tells us that 67:53 - we will continue. 67:56 - We will abide. 67:58 - We will remain in God's hand. 68:04 - We will not give up no matter what 68:07 - happens.
II. We Will Be Grounded And Settled
The second evidence of our salvation is 68:14 - that we will be grounded and settled. 68:19 - To be grounded speaks of a strong 68:22 - foundation 68:24 - and the word settled means to be 68:28 - steadfast, 68:30 - firmly seated. It is a solid commitment. 68:36 - But the question is 68:38 - to be grounded and settled in what? 68:43 - In the gospel. 68:46 - It is the gospel that has saved us. And 68:50 - it is the gospel that we must build our 68:53 - foundation and be firmly rooted. 68:58 - Again, it does not mean that we can lose 69:00 - our salvation by not being grounded and 69:03 - settled. 69:05 - But rather what it means is that 69:08 - the evidence of our salvation 69:12 - is in our continuous 69:15 - steadfastness. 69:19 - Some people look at the gospel 69:22 - as if it is 69:26 - just ABCs. 69:28 - or the elementary of the Christian faith 69:33 - and they will say, "Well, I've graduated 69:36 - from that. 69:38 - I've heard and learned the gospel 69:41 - many, many years ago. I've gone past 69:45 - that." 69:46 - The gospel is not for me. 69:50 - It is for the unbelievers. 69:54 - Dear friend, the gospel is not just 69:58 - some ABCs. 70:01 - It is everything about our Christian 70:03 - life. 70:05 - We need the gospel to live for Jesus 70:09 - every day of our lives. 70:11 - We need to preach the gospel to 70:13 - ourselves all the time. Why? 70:18 - So that we will live out the gospel in 70:22 - our lives. 70:25 - BB Warfield 70:28 - the theologian once said, 70:31 - "The gospel is not only true at the 70:34 - point 70:36 - when we believed. 70:38 - It is just as true after we have 70:41 - believed and it will continue to be true 70:45 - for as long as we live." 70:50 - What is the gospel? 70:53 - It is the good news that Jesus came for 70:57 - us. 70:59 - He died and shed his precious blood 71:04 - to wash away all our sins. 71:07 - He was buried, 71:10 - but on the third day he rose again from 71:12 - the dead 71:13 - to give us the victory over sin, death, 71:17 - and eternal life. 71:20 - Do we only need that at the point of our 71:23 - salvation 71:25 - and then we can forget about it all 71:28 - together 71:30 - after that? Most certainly not. 71:36 - Our need for Jesus Christ, our 71:39 - relationship with him, 71:42 - our fellowship in his life, in his 71:45 - suffering, in his crucifixion, 71:49 - in his death, in his blood, in his 71:51 - resurrection 71:53 - will always be there for as long as we 71:58 - live. 72:01 - The gospel is not only good for the 72:03 - unbelievers. 72:07 - You and I need the gospel to be saved. 72:11 - We need the gospel to live our lives, to 72:15 - be empowered by the gospel, 72:18 - to be sanctified by the gospel, to 72:21 - persevere in the gospel 72:25 - until 72:27 - we see our Lord Jesus face to face. 72:34 - Dear friend, 72:36 - do you still remember 72:39 - the time when you first came to know the 72:42 - Lord Jesus Christ? 72:47 - You heard the gospel message. 72:50 - Your heart was convicted. 72:54 - You cried out to Jesus to save you and 72:57 - forgive all your sins. 73:01 - You were so happy that all your sins 73:03 - have been forgiven. 73:06 - God became your heavenly father. 73:10 - The Holy Spirit indwelt in your heart 73:14 - and you knew that 73:17 - one day you would dwell in the heavenly 73:20 - mansion that Jesus had gone to prepare 73:23 - for you. 73:25 - You were so excited to come to church, 73:28 - so eager to attend fellowship group 73:31 - meetings, 73:33 - so zealous to serve the Lord. 73:37 - Do you still remember those times? 73:40 - And then what happened? 73:44 - Problems start to creep into your life. 73:50 - You have to go through certain trials 73:53 - and struggles. 73:55 - You have to face very difficult people. 73:59 - You have a lot of challenging 74:01 - commitments. 74:03 - You have to carry heavy burdens and so 74:06 - forth. 74:08 - You start to doubt whether God still 74:11 - loves you. 74:13 - You know you are saved and you will not 74:16 - lose your salvation. 74:20 - But you begin to lose the joy of your 74:24 - salvation. 74:27 - Coming to church is no longer your 74:29 - priority. 74:33 - You start to drag your feet to church at 74:35 - every Lord's day. 74:38 - And you disappear immediately after the 74:41 - worship service. 74:44 - Giving your tithes and offerings is like 74:47 - rendering your income tax. 74:53 - And serving the Lord 74:56 - is more of an obligation 74:59 - than a joy. 75:03 - You start to give excuses 75:05 - not to attend all the spiritual 75:07 - activities. 75:10 - Now consider this. 75:13 - What has happened 75:15 - between the time you first believed 75:20 - until the time your heart 75:25 - become so cold 75:29 - the gospel? 75:32 - You have drifted away from the gospel. 75:38 - Is that not true? 75:43 - That is why we must be grounded and 75:46 - settled 75:47 - to make a conscious effort in letting 75:50 - the gospel of Jesus Christ be the 75:53 - foundation of our lives. 75:57 - How do we do that? 76:00 - The same gospel that had moved us to 76:05 - believe at the beginning, 76:08 - it must still move us today. 76:12 - The same truth 76:14 - that Jesus died on the cross to offer us 76:19 - the forgiveness of sins which had 76:21 - brought tears to our eyes. It must still 76:25 - bring tears to our eyes today. 76:30 - The same motivation that caused us to 76:33 - rise up and serve our living savior 76:37 - at the beginning, 76:39 - it must still motivate us today. 76:44 - We need the gospel to live our lives 76:51 - not just at the point of our conversions 76:56 - but at every moment 76:59 - and this is what it means to be grounded 77:03 - and settled.
III. We Will Be Unmovable
The third evidence of our salvation is 77:12 - that we will be unmovable. 77:16 - Be not move away means to be unmovable. 77:21 - It has the same idea as the word settled 77:25 - but with more intensity. 77:28 - Why? 77:30 - Because there are certain things that 77:32 - will work against us 77:35 - and force us to be moved 77:39 - and we must not waver. 77:43 - It has the idea to stand our ground 77:48 - in the midst of adversities and 77:50 - challenges 77:52 - whatever they may be. 77:56 - If I may give you an illustration, 78:00 - it will be like sailing a boat. 78:04 - Once you decided on the destination, 78:07 - this is the direction to go. 78:11 - You start to sail the boat, right? 78:15 - There will be many things that will try 78:17 - to blow you off the course. 78:21 - Sometimes the wind can carry you 78:25 - forward. 78:26 - But it can push you backward as well. 78:31 - The waves can be so strong that it can 78:34 - capsize the boat and on top of that you 78:38 - have to endure the uncertainties of the 78:41 - weather. It can be extremely cold 78:45 - or tremendously hot. 78:49 - This is an illustration 78:52 - of us 78:54 - as believers. 78:57 - Our destination 78:59 - is on the shores of heaven 79:03 - and we set our eyes toward heaven 79:08 - and we start to live 79:11 - as a new man in Jesus Christ. 79:15 - just like the boat sailing toward the 79:19 - destination. 79:22 - But there will be so many things that 79:24 - will trouble us, 79:28 - that will distract us, 79:31 - try to shake us off 79:34 - and move us. 79:39 - Just when we thought everything seems to 79:41 - be good, 79:44 - our children are doing well in school, 79:47 - we have just gotten a promotion, 79:51 - bought a new house in a nice 79:53 - neighborhood, 79:55 - a new car. 79:57 - Then all of a sudden, 80:00 - we receive a medical report from the 80:02 - doctor 80:04 - and it is bad news. 80:07 - Our 80:09 - whole world seems to collapse. 80:13 - How can we not be moved? 80:17 - Or our children go to school 80:20 - and they are taught all kinds of 80:22 - philosophies and humanistic opinions 80:27 - and they come home 80:30 - with those strange ideas 80:33 - about atheism. 80:36 - evolution theory, 80:40 - homosexuality as an alternative 80:42 - lifestyle, 80:44 - samesex marriage. 80:47 - And then they tell us, "Well, daddy and 80:51 - mommy, it does not really matter what 80:55 - you believe in 80:57 - because all roads lead to Rome." 81:02 - How can we not be moved? 81:06 - Or your husband go to work 81:09 - and all his colleagues are unbelievers 81:12 - day in day out. He has to listen to 81:16 - their ungodly conversations. 81:19 - He has to endure their dirty jokes. 81:23 - He is surrounded 81:25 - with immoralities and worldliness. 81:30 - Then you start to notice a change in the 81:33 - way he speak and in the way he behaves. 81:38 - You realize that he has been influenced 81:42 - by the things of this world. 81:46 - How can you not be moved? 81:52 - Well, it is not just the family. What 81:55 - about the church? 81:58 - You have been attending the church for 82:00 - many years. 82:02 - You are very happy to attend a 82:05 - bibleelving 82:07 - and bible defending church. 82:10 - A church that believes in the 82:11 - fundamental doctrines of the Bible. 82:15 - And then gradually 82:18 - you notice 82:21 - some changes. 82:25 - People start to bring all kinds of 82:28 - strange teachings into the church. 82:32 - The leaders are not able to stop the 82:34 - infiltration 82:36 - for they themselves are no longer strong 82:40 - in their convictions and they try to 82:42 - compromise and accommodate everyone. 82:48 - The music in the church has changed. 82:53 - The preaching has changed. 82:56 - The people 82:58 - is are worldly 83:02 - and the church has turned ecumenical. 83:07 - How can you not be moved? 83:11 - We have to understand that there will be 83:14 - many things that will work against us 83:18 - whether as a family, as a church, as an 83:21 - individual 83:23 - to move us 83:26 - to shake us. 83:28 - Satan cannot do anything against the 83:31 - cross. 83:33 - Our Lord Jesus has accomplished the work 83:37 - of salvation 83:39 - when he said, "It is finished." 83:43 - But what Satan would do 83:46 - is to try his best to move us away from 83:51 - the will of God, 83:53 - to disonor God, to disobey God. 84:00 - And when he does that, 84:02 - he has achieved his goals. 84:08 - That is why the command is given to us. 84:12 - Be not moved away. 84:16 - This unmovable stance does not come 84:19 - automatically. 84:22 - We do not become a strong and firm 84:25 - believer all of a sudden. It is a 84:28 - spiritual exercise that we have to be 84:31 - engaged in 84:33 - at every moment. 84:37 - We have to stand our ground in the midst 84:41 - of adversities 84:44 - and challenges 84:47 - all the days of our lives. 84:52 - And how do we do that? 84:55 - By clinging onto the hope of the gospel. 85:00 - Do not let it go. 85:04 - Be grounded, 85:07 - be settled, 85:10 - be not moved away from the hope of the 85:13 - gospel. 85:16 - Take a moment and consider this. If 85:18 - there's no such thing as life after 85:21 - death, no eternal life, no judgment, no 85:25 - accountability, 85:28 - no resurrection, no heaven, and this is 85:32 - the only life we have. When we die, 85:36 - everything is finished. 85:39 - Then our hope is based on this temporal 85:42 - life. 85:44 - Such a hope is no hope at all. 85:49 - Whether it be 70, 80 or 90 years, 85:55 - if that is the case, 85:58 - then you and I should just 86:01 - live every moment for ourselves, 86:05 - eat, drink, and be merry, 86:10 - and then we die. 86:13 - Psalm 86:15 - once said, "The word useless is one of 86:19 - the most dreadful words in the English 86:23 - language." 86:25 - To be called useless is a terrible 86:28 - thing. 86:30 - However, 86:31 - the most dreadful word is not useless, 86:37 - but hopeless. 86:40 - A useless person may someday still 86:43 - become useful. 86:46 - But if there's no hope, then all is 86:49 - lost. 86:51 - Without hope, 86:53 - there's nothing left. 86:57 - Hope is 86:59 - a most wonderful thing. 87:03 - It is the blessing 87:07 - that gives meaning to life. 87:12 - Hope is the very thing that cause us to 87:14 - do what we do, 87:16 - to live the way we live our lives. 87:21 - True biblical hope can only be built on 87:27 - a true promise. 87:31 - It is built on the confidence in a 87:34 - person 87:36 - who can deliver what he has promised. 87:42 - If someone promised to give you $1 87:44 - million, 87:46 - you want to be sure that he actually has 87:50 - that amount of money. 87:54 - You also want to be certain that he is a 87:57 - man of his word, 88:00 - that he is credible. 88:02 - If he does not have sufficient money 88:05 - or he is not a man of his word 88:09 - then his promise would be worthless. 88:16 - Our hope is based on the gospel of Jesus 88:20 - Christ. 88:21 - Often 88:23 - times people understand salvation as 88:26 - only in saving a person at the point of 88:31 - his or her conversion and that's it. 88:37 - But the power of salvation, the power of 88:40 - the gospel does not stop at our 88:44 - conversion as in our justification that 88:47 - we are safe to go to heaven. Full stop. 88:52 - It continues to save us as in our 88:57 - sanctification, 88:59 - transforming our lives moment by moment. 89:05 - And this sanctifying work of the gospel 89:08 - will continue to save us 89:12 - until ultimately 89:15 - we are saved in our glorification. 89:20 - That is the time when the salvific work 89:26 - is perfected. 89:28 - We will be forever and ever free from 89:32 - sin, Satan, and the world. 89:38 - Jesus 89:40 - who had saved us in the past, 89:44 - he promised 89:46 - to continue saving us in the present 89:51 - and he will save us in the future 89:55 - ultimately. 89:58 - He is the everlasting God who is 90:01 - truthful, 90:03 - credible, 90:05 - unchangeable, 90:07 - almighty 90:10 - and he will keep his promise. 90:16 - Believe in him. 90:19 - We can see this clearly in our lives. 90:22 - Even after our conversions, 90:25 - we still struggle with temptations. And 90:28 - at times, we are overwhelmed with sins. 90:32 - Every time we sin, we are convicted. 90:36 - We confess, repent, 90:39 - and ask the Lord to forgive us. And we 90:41 - are cleansed. 90:44 - And then we stumble and fall. 90:47 - We are convicted. 90:49 - We confess, repent and ask the Lord to 90:53 - forgive us and we are cleansed. 90:57 - This is the process of 91:00 - sanctification 91:02 - whereby God does his mighty work of 91:05 - transforming our lives and it goes on 91:08 - and on and on 91:11 - until the day we die. 91:15 - And in the resurrection 91:18 - or when our Lord Jesus comes for us in 91:21 - the rapture 91:24 - we will be glorified 91:27 - both body and soul. 91:31 - He who saves us saves us to the 91:35 - uttermost. 91:39 - Therefore, Paul said to the Colossians, 91:42 - "This hope of the gospel which ye have 91:46 - heard and which was preached to every 91:49 - creature which is under heaven, 91:53 - cling onto it, 91:55 - never let it go." 92:00 - In other words, the gospel is universal. 92:04 - The gospel was for the Colossians just 92:07 - as it was for the whole world. Every 92:10 - creature 92:12 - under the heaven. 92:17 - Some people have this misconception 92:20 - that Christianity 92:22 - is a white man's religion. 92:26 - That is not true. 92:28 - It is a blatant lie. 92:33 - In fact, Jesus was born a Jew 92:38 - in Middle East and in our modern times, 92:43 - he would not be classified as a white 92:45 - man. 92:48 - The gospel is not only for a particular 92:52 - race, culture, or gender. 92:58 - It transcends ethnicities, 93:01 - cultures, genders, 93:04 - geography 93:07 - and political boundaries. 93:11 - It is for the whole world. 93:15 - Every creature which is under 93:19 - heaven 93:21 - whether Caucasians, 93:24 - Asians, 93:25 - Chinese, 93:27 - Indians, 93:30 - the Middle Eastern people 93:32 - and so forth. 93:36 - Whenever we preach such a message about 93:39 - the evidence of our salvation, 93:44 - there will always be people who would 93:46 - say, 93:48 - "Are you trying to question my faith? 93:52 - Are you trying to cause me to doubt my 93:55 - salvation?" 93:58 - No, 94:00 - that is not our intention 94:04 - to demonstrate 94:06 - the evidence of our salvation 94:10 - is for our own good. 94:13 - It is for our own benefits. 94:18 - It is inevitable that there will be 94:20 - trials, tribulations and afflictions, 94:24 - challenges and other issues of life, 94:28 - sicknesses 94:29 - and illnesses, 94:32 - painful separations, 94:36 - agonizing 94:38 - financial and 94:42 - relationship struggles. 94:47 - all sorts of problems. 94:52 - But those things cannot steal away our 94:56 - salvation. 94:59 - Do you know what those things can do? 95:03 - They can rob 95:05 - away the joy of our salvation. 95:10 - They can plague us in such a way that 95:14 - you and I would be rendered ineffective 95:17 - in the work of the Lord. 95:20 - They can plague us in such a way that 95:25 - we will not live a meaningful and godly 95:30 - life to the glory of God. 95:33 - God does not want that to happen to us. 95:37 - So he commands us 95:42 - continue in the faith 95:44 - be grounded and settled. 95:48 - Be not moved away from the hope of the 95:52 - gospel. 95:54 - Cling onto it. 95:56 - You who believe it, 96:00 - press on and persevere in it. 96:06 - even as we speak. 96:09 - Our dear beloved Reverend Rego Galape 96:12 - from the Philippines 96:16 - has just been diagnosed with cancer 96:19 - and he's still waiting for the biopsy 96:22 - results to determine the spread of the 96:25 - cancer. 96:28 - Will he survive the cancer? 96:32 - Nisha 96:35 - has been admitted to the hospital 96:38 - because her water bag has broken. 96:42 - Even though the baby is still not due 96:44 - yet, 96:47 - it will be due in two months time. 96:51 - Will both mother and child be preserved? 96:57 - Sister G is still in hospital. 97:02 - She's not out of the woods yet. 97:05 - Will she get better? 97:07 - Will she recover? 97:11 - Or will she be taken away from us? 97:14 - We do not have the answers to all these 97:17 - questions. 97:19 - But one thing we do know, 97:23 - the gospel that has saved them in the 97:27 - past 97:29 - will continue to save them in the 97:32 - present 97:35 - and will save them in the uttermost. 97:40 - Even if they have not on their doors, 97:44 - it is but an instrument to usher them 97:48 - into 97:50 - the presence of God. 97:54 - And when our turns come, 98:00 - we will meet again on that beautiful 98:04 - shore 98:06 - in heaven 98:08 - in the sweet by and by.
Dear friend, 98:16 - this is the hope of the gospel 98:20 - that we believe in 98:23 - and the evidence of our salvation 98:28 - is that we will continue in the faith. 98:32 - We will be grounded and settled. 98:36 - We will not be moved away from this 98:39 - blessed hope of the gospel. 98:45 - The perseverance of the saints 98:48 - is one of the most blessed evidence 98:53 - that we are forever saved. 98:59 - The true believer 99:01 - will press on and persevere 99:06 - not because we want to be saved 99:10 - but because we are already saved. 99:14 - In reality, in all truthfulness, 99:18 - God is the one who is keeping us. 99:23 - And we are responding 99:25 - by trusting 99:27 - in his faithfulness 99:32 - to the glory of the Almighty God.
