The 201 annual church camp is now over! Thank God for a blessed time with other friends and fellow believers. We praise and thank God for safety, journey mercies and for providing his servant, Rev Quek Suan Yew to minister His Word to the people. This year’s theme is “God’s Faithfulness” – the overarching theme for 2011 as we celebrate the 25th anniversary year of the church.

The 2011 Bethel Camp, held from the 10th to the 14th of April, has come to a close. The camp topic was “God’s Faithfulness” which is the overarching theme for 2011 as Bethel celebrates its 25th Anniversary Year. Indeed, it is an important reminder to all believers of the sovereign and powerful hand of God, as we look forward to the forthcoming years in serving Him.

May the Lord be with Rev Paul Cheng as he serves Him as His servant.

Below is a reproduction of brother Paul’s testimony as printed in the Pastoral Chat.

My dear Bethelites,

Since 2004, Bethelites had prayed for an Assistant Pastor who will be able to carry on the pastoral care of the church. It was not until 2008 that the Lord answered our prayers in a mysterious way. I had to undergo a triple by-pass heart surgery which resulted in a need for a preacher to take the pulpit ministry and care of the church in November and December 2008. When I asked Rev. Dr Koshy whether there was anyone who could take the responsibility, he suggested Preacher Paul Cheng. And that was how Preacher Paul Cheng and his family came to Melbourne in November 2008 to feed the flock of Christ in Bethel. After the two months of work with Bethel, he was approached by the Session to prayerfully consider taking over the pastoral responsibility and duty from me. After praying and seeking our good Lord’s will, Preacher Paul Cheng and his family affirmatively answered the call to come to Melbourne. He and his family have been here for almost two years. He has faithfully and diligently served the Lord as we are all witnesses.

On this Lord’s Day he will be ordained according to the apostolic order, when our Lord Jesus Christ called the Twelve, and they in turn ordained Matthias to take over the place of Judas Iscariot, and the Apostle Paul ordained Timothy and Titus as ministers of the gospel of Christ.

The following is a brief testimony of Preacher Paul Cheng’s life until the time when he and his family are called to serve in Bethel BPC.

I was brought up in a family that embraces Roman Catholicism and ancestral worship. At the tender age of twelve my doting mother passed away. I was very bitter and began to doubt the existence of God and state of disillusionment over life and death.

At the age of 18, I was called for compulsory National Military Service in Singapore. Being an atheist, peer pressure and influence in the army led me to the world of music and drug. For many years, I found myself enslaved in the world of drug addiction. However, I thank God that at a time when I was in a stupor of dependence on drug that my senses returned to me, and was introduced to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a half-way house for drug addicts called The Helping Hand, which is run by Christians. Through the faithful preaching of God’s Word, I came to know that Christ died for my sins. I clearly remembered the day when I knelt and confessed all my sins before God and believed with all my heart the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal Saviour. God transformed me, and His Word took root in my life.

After my conversion, I helped my father to manage his chicken rice restaurant business as he was getting on in age. But deep within me, I had no desire to pursue a business career. I was then sandwiched between helping my dear father in running his business and seeking the will of God for my life. I sought the Lord for His heavenly wisdom to make the right decision. It was then that the Lord placed in my heart a call for full-time ministry

In 1999, God opened a door for me to study His Word in the Far Eastern Bible College, Singapore (Ezra 7:10) so as to be equipped to reach out to drug addicts, who were in the same dire straits as I once was. At that time I was worshipping in Gethsemane Bible-Presbyterian Church (GBPC) of which Rev. Dr. Prabhudas Koshy was and still is the pastor. I also served in The Helping Hand from 2002 to 2005. Then in 2005 I was called to spearhead The Gethsemane Care Ministry for drug addicts. The following year, I was elected a Deacon serving in the Session of GBPC.
In 200l while studying in FEBC, the Lord graciously brought Hye Young a fellow student, now my wife, into my life. Since then she has been a faithful and God-fearing wife. Thereafter, we were blessed with two lovely boys, Timothy and Silas. It is my desire that as a family we will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15).

In November 2008, I was asked by Rev. Dr. Prabhudas Koshy to minister the Word of God at Bethel BPC, Melbourne for two months in the absence of Pastor Khoo. My heart was filled with fear and trepidation not knowing what would be expected of me and what would lie ahead when we travelled to Melbourne. By the grace of God, my family and I had a blessed time during those two months. The Bethelites lovingly cared for us. Upon returning to Singapore about two months later, I received an invitation to serve full-time with Bethel BPC. The words of the prophet Isaiah came to my mind (6:8): Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here I am; send me.

Life is short and it is my earnest desire to serve the Lord while I still have the strength and energy. The road ahead may be tough and challenging, but my family and I have come to Bethel with fresh zeal and enthusiasm to serve the Lord. It is our humble prayer that God will continue to see us through extending His Kingdom to the praise and glory of His Name.

In the name of Christ Jesus, let every Bethelite encourage him and his family labouring in the Lord’s vineyard.

May the Lord be with you always and bless you abundantly.

With love in Christ,
Pastor Khoo

Revised Bethel BP Church Constitution

In the 2008 year, the Session of Bethel has been made aware of a number of issues that affect the Constitution of the Church. In just the last month, we have had many blessed opportunities to meet each Member of the Congregation and to explain what the changes were, as well as provide an opportunity to gather feedback and suggestions.

Since the open forum held on the 28th of August, Session has met on a number of occasions to deliberate and consider all the feedback acquired. We Praise and thank the Lord for His sustaining grace and wisdom in helping us complete this process.

As presented, today is the date in which we present our final amendments to the constitution. We thank the Members of the Church who have provided constructive feedback and for taking the time to review the documents.

You can download the final, amended Constitution as well as Session’s response to the feedback using the links below.

Please continue to pray for the wisdom and for the unity and peace of the Church as we prayerfully consider these changes. Session is planning to hold an ECM on the 9th of October to adopt the proposed amended constitution. May the Lord continue to bless us as we seek to do this to the Praise and Glory of His Name.

The name of the second book of the Pentateuch – the first five books of the Bible – is Exodus. This English name for the book is derived from the Greek translation of the Old Testament, which is called the Septuagint (meaning translation of the seventy, abbreviated LXX). The title fits only the first part of the book (1:1-15:21), which narrates the going out of the Israelites from Egypt. The Hebrew Masoretic text has the name of the book as Shermot, which means Names. It is taken from the first two words of the book, ve-elleh shermot – And these are the names. The phrase links the accounts of the book with those of the first book, Genesis. It tells of how God in a great and marvellous way kept His covenant promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob by taking their descendants out of slavery in Egypt. In fact the first six words of Exodus is an exact quotation from the first six words of Genesis 46:8. Thus the Hebrew text of Exodus begins with the conjunction “and” (vav) which is translated “now” (KJV).

The intervening section (Exodus15:22 – 18:27) narrates the journey of the Israelites on their way to Mount Sinai.

Praise and thank God for a blessed YPG Camp for 2008! This year the camp was held at Grantville Lodge from 28th September to 2 October. The theme for this year was ‘Aboard the disciple-ship’, with the central verse being Luke 9:23 – ‘And he said to them all, if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.’

We thank our Lord for the youth who had the opportunity to attend the camp, either on a full time or part time basis. Each camper was placed into one of four groups, whom they would remain with for the duration of the camp for various duties and activities.

Our speaker this year was Brother Dominino De La Cruz from the Philippians and a student of FEBC. We thank God for allowing Brother Dominino to be our camp speaker given that he needed to apply for a visa on short notice. Six messages were faithfully delivered by Brother Dominino this year:

1. How to aboard the disciple ship (Following Christ)
2. I must work the works of God (Service)
3. Be a spiritual sharpener (Accountability/Caring)
4. Get our priorities right (priorities)
5. Wake up from your spiritual slumber (complacency)
6. Guideline for the church (Ownership)

The messages helped the youth by reminding them of the way to be a true disciple for Christ. The first step was to be a disciple; they must first deny themselves, take up the cross and follow Jesus. Furthermore there was strong emphasis on the importance of prayer in our lives and in churches today which reinforced the need for us to have an intimate relationship with God; putting God first in our lives; understanding the importance of agape love to one and other and the importance of our personal service for God being a true disciple following Christ. The messages were all recorded and are available for download from the church website.

Each day began with morning devotions in assigned groups followed by a time of personal devotion and reflection, and ended with dormitory sharing and prayers before bed. Along with the six messages there were 3 workshops with an emphasis on agape. Thank God for the nice weather that we had for the duration of the camp, and also for the opportunity gather around the camp fire to singing praises unto our Lord on the final night.

We also thank God for the younger ones who attended the camp for the first time, this camp was the first in which those who are not currently in the YPG (But were considering making the transition in the coming year) were given the chance to have a sneak peak at what we do as a fellowship group. Praise the Lord that they were able to fit in and integrate well with the rest of the YPG, and praise God that a number of them have already made a smooth transition into the YPG.

Overall, praise and thanks be to our Lord for a truly blessed camp in 2008, and the time of fellowship and learning that we had over the duration of the camp. Given the success of the camp this year, the 2009 YPG camp will most likely be held again in the spring timeslot, during the third term holidays. We pray that we will see the youth at camp again in 2009!

The 2008 Bethel Camp, held from the 24th to the 28th of March has just come and gone. It has been about 4 years since our last visit from Rev Quek, and this year’s theme of ‘Growing in Love’ has been a timely reminder to all, new and seasoned believers, about the motivation that we should have in doing anything in life as we testify of the work which God does in our lives.

The book of Genesis and four other books – Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy – are known as the Torah (Heb.hrwt). These five books were written by Moses (Exodus 24:4, Numbers 33:2, Deuteronomy 5:22; 31:9). The Torah, comprising five books, is one of three parts of the Hebrew Old Testament. The other two parts are: the Prophets (Heb. nabi’im) and the Writings (Heb. ketobim). The order of the thirty – nine books in the Hebrew version is slightly different from the English version. The reason is because the English version is based on the Septuagint. The name “Genesis,” which means “creation” or “generation” is taken from the Septuagint (LXX). But the Hebrew title of the book of Genesis is bereshit which is the first word of the first sentence of the book, and it means “In the beginning”.

DHW Study - Book of Esther

The book of Esther is another one of the thirty-nine books of the Old Testament that is inspired by God and is therefore infallible, inerrant, completely reliable and trustworthy. Although the name of God is not mentioned even once in the ten chapters of the book, it is not a legitimate basis for rejecting its canonicity. Many political leaders and nations in the world do not mention God or even reject Him, but that does not change the fact that He exists and He is very much involved in the affairs of men (Isaiah 45:15) . So in the book of Esther, in every turn of events, the unseen hand of God was working out the purpose and plan of His will. Indeed, if it had not been for God, who played a vital part in the flow of events as historically recorded, the book would not be easily understood. The inspired divine writer of the book is unknown. Some have suggested Mordecai. Others think that the writer was a Persian Jew who had returned to Judaea, and wished to commemorate the celebration of Purim with the children of Israel to remember God’s deliverance. Whatever the case may be, the identity of the writer is not as important as the fact that someone whom God had inspired had written the record. Today, we can understand why the Israelites yearly celebrate the Festival of Purim (February-March). Besides explaining the origin of Purim, the most instructive teaching of Esther is that of the providence of God sovereignly working over nations and individuals. A prayerful and careful study of the book should bring comfort and joy, increase confidence and courage, and change our small view of God into awesome amazement.

The following article was published in the Church Weekly (15/07/2007) under the pastoral chat and has been edited for
presentation purposes. Please note that the recordings are now available to be downloaded off this page for your own review.

My dear Bethelites,

This has been a truly blessed week with the Church Family Camp at the Grampians. Thank God for the time He provided
for us to gather together to study the Scriptures together and to be led by Rev Dr Jeffrey Khoo. The series of
messages on the theme of ‘Christian Living in the Last Days’ was timely and apt for our times.

There was an introductory message provided by Pastor Khoo who encouraged us to live out the truth found in Hebrews
10:19-25. We were encouraged to understand that Christianity is the ‘new and living way’ and we ought to draw near
to God and to focus on others to provoke one another to love and good works.

Introduction Message – Pastor Khoo

Our introductory message was delivered by our Pastor. It centered around the passage of Hebrews 10:19-25 – which
reminds us about the work of Jesus Christ as the only way to God.

Download Audio – Introduction Message – 12.1 MB

Message 1 – “Make Sure Your Salvation”

Message 1 was titled “Make Sure Your Salvation” (1 Peter 1:1-9). The message was centered around the nature of true
faith:

knowing the Gospel,

agreeing with the underlying message of the Gospel (man is unable to save himself), and

believing or submitting to the Gospel truth. If any one of the elements is missing, true faith is not in existence.

Download Audio – Make Sure Of Your Salvation – 21.6 MB

Message 2 – “Are You Growing In Your Spiritual Life?”

Message 2 was titled “Are You Growing In Your Spiritual Life?” (1 Peter 2:1-12). This was focused on ensuring we
understand that we need to grow in our spiritual life. A sign of a true believer is the appetite for God’s Word, as
the illustration in v2 provides that as newborn babes would demand milk, new believers should similarly be demanding
to have God’s Word to grow and mature.

Download Audio – Are You Growing In Your Spiritual Life – 24.7 MB

Message 3 – “Using The Right Bible”

Message 3 was titled “Using the Right Bible” (1 Peter 1:13-2:3). The message was focused on emphasising the need for
us to recognise that Satan’s usual pattern of attack is to aim at God’s Word. We should all be aware of this and
make sure we know the basis for why we need to preciously guard and stand firm on God’s Truth. Critically, we need
to appreciate 2 Timothy 3:16 and understand that God’s inspired Word is both verbal and plenary.

Download Audio – Using The Right Bible – 29.6 MB

Message 4 – “Submission To Authorities”

Message 4 was titled “Submission to Authorities” (1 Peter 2:9-25). and is aimed at highlighting submission to human
authorities as a sign of the Holy Spirit in us, as this is not entirely possible without the Holy Spirit in our
hearts. Rebellion and imperfect submission is the trademark of the world we live in. By submitting and yielding to
those in authority (where it does not contravene the God’s Word): our employers, those in government, and law
enforcers; we are able to create opportunities for those around us to see that we are different, separated, and
witness to them more effectively on our faith.

Download Audio – Submission To Authorities – 25.5 MB

Message 5 – “Be Prepared To Suffer”

Message 5 was titled “Be Prepared To Suffer” (1 Peter 3:8-18) and focuses on how we ought to reflect Our Christian
nature within by not repaying evil for evil by with good. This high standard of Christian living is challenging and
is not possible without the Holy Spirit within us.

An example illustrating this was from Daniel 3:16-18 where we read of a measured and controlled response to
adversity faced by 3 saints: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, Daniel’s 3 friends. They refused to bow to King
Nebuchadnezzar’s new idol as this would violate God’s laws. Despite the King’s harsh sentence to burn them in the
furnace, the 3 saints respectfully entreated the King to explain their faith and accepted the King’s sentence.

Download Audio – Be Prepared To Suffer – 27 MB

Message 6 – “Be Indoctrinated With God’s Word”

Message 6 was entitled “Be Indoctrinated with God’s Word” (1 Peter 5:1-4) and it stressed the importance for us to
be truly grounded on God’s Word. Our Christian walk can be easily compromised where we don’t know and understand
enough Scriptures.

There are also examples from Church History where Athanasius stood up to Arius in the controversy surrounding the
nature of Christ: whether He was 100% God or some lesser percentage. Thank God for Athanasius’ knowledge of
Scripture and resulted in a convincing vote of the Bishops in attendance of the Council of Nicene.

Download Audio – Be Indoctrinated With God’s Word – 25.8 MB

Message 7 – “Know Your Enemy”

Message 7 was entitled “Know Your Enemy” (1 Peter 5:1-11). This sobering message was to alert us to the nature of
Satan and how he works to prowl on those who are weak or young in the faith, just as roaring lions would prey on the
weaker (young and sick animals) prey when hunting. The main mode of attack is to tempt us to succumb to the sin of
pride. The only effective antidote for such attacks is to constantly check our hearts, to be clothed in humility and
to quickly build our faith by having a good understanding of Scriptures. Satan himself is the expert in pride, as
this was his undoing, thinking that he could usurp God.

Download Audio – Know Your Enemy – 20.5 MB

The messages have been recorded and everyone is encouraged to get a copy to listen to and to search the Scriptures
earnestly whilst listening to them. Elder Charles Choong will be willing to make copies available.

During testimony time, it was clear that everyone was touched by the week’s messages and interaction. There were
moving testimonials and some challenging personal commitments were shared with the other campers. Indeed, it was a
blessed week for all who attended.

Next year’s camp is booked at Grampians again. It is a beautiful site and prayerfully, everyone in the congregation
can make it. The confirmed booking dates are from Tuesday, March 25 2008 to Friday, March 28 2008, immediately
following the Easter long weekend. Please plan to make yourselves available and don’t miss out on such a blessed
week of studying God’s Word and fellowship with fellow believers.

In Christ,
Dn James Nah

The study of the book of Acts should benefit the diligent and conscientious student in many ways. It is the only divinely inspired account of the beginning and early expansion of the Christian church. It is our main and reliable source of information of the Christians and the church in that period. Luke recorded the period which began with the ascension of Christ (around A.D. 30) to the time when Paul was under house arrest (A.D. 62) – a period of about thirty two years. Although it was not his intention to give a total historical account of the church as a whole, Luke aimed at giving a proper account of the geographical expansion of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and its supernatural origin. The account of the charges brought up by the Jews against Gentile Christians at the Jerusalem Council shows Luke’s purpose to eliminate any religious suspicions against Judaism by the Gentile believers. In addition, Luke’s accounts of Paul’s trials before the Roman governors show that Christianity was not and is not against the Roman government.

Ruth is a wonderful book. It is loved by everyone who would read it. The theme of love, commitment, kindness, loyalty and integrity fill in the book. These themes are timeless. Ruth is one of two books in the Bible that bears the name of a woman. The other is the book of Esther. The inspired writer of the book is unknown. Jewish tradition named Samuel as the writer. The date is around 1050 B.C. and the historical background of the events in the book was during the period of the Judges. Although it is a small book containing only four chapters, it is not lacking in the knowledge and understanding of God, and the marvelous and gracious way He deals with people who trust and honour Him. The first chapter of the book describes the tragedy experienced by Naomi and her return to Bethlehem with Ruth, her daughter-in-law, who expressed commitment to remain with her. The next chapter features the providential meeting between Ruth and Boaz who treated her with great kindness. The third chapter relates how Naomi devised a plan to inform Boaz of his right as her kinsman-redeemer to take Ruth as his wife. Boaz responded favourably. The final chapter records how Boaz became the kinsman-redeemer and married Ruth. A son was born who was the grandfather of David.
