DHW Study - The Book of Ezra

Ezra

The opening verses of Ezra 1:1, 2 are identical with the last two verses of 2 Chronicles 36:22, 23. This shows continuity of the two books. However, there was a gap of seventy years between them. In this way, the writers of the books intimate that God continued to work out His plan and purposes in and through Israel.1 The study of Ezra shows that the LORD God is able to move the hearts of kings and use them as instruments to remind us that He is true to His plans and promises. The book also teaches how God’s chosen people can gain victory through faithful perseverance and obedience to Him. We are living in “an age of experienced-centred, clap-happy worship and entertainment-orientated” approach to God. The book demonstrates to us that God is holy and that He demands reverent worship and uncompromising loyalty from His people. In addition the lives of the faithful individuals in the book inspire anyone who wants to live a victorious Christian life. It also points to the need for constant spiritual renewal in the lives of God’s people. We will also see that God always has the right man for the specific needs of His people at the right time, namely, Zerubbabel the governor, Jeshua the high priest, and Ezra the scribe.
